Honfleur (Calvados)
Honfleur is probably one of Normandy’s most picturesque and well-preserved towns. It is a fishing and sailing port, dear to the Impressionists and other artists.
One can stroll around the port and sit at a terrace; to taste cider and pancakes or fresh seafood from the morning catch.
The activity is centered around the Vieux Bassin or old harbour with its slate-fronted houses, which seem like they are about to topple over. The area oozes a lot of charm.
With the extraordinary light of Normandy and its truly exquisite charm, it is easy to see why Honfleur has attracted so many painters. Eugene Boudin, the seascape painter who taught Monet, was born here in 1824. This seems to have set off a trend with Renoir, Pissarro and Cézanne all visiting the town. Their works are displayed at the Musee Eugene.
There is also the famous heritage of Honfleur to be discovered through the pretty and narrow streets, old houses, monuments and traditional markets.
Honfleur is a dynamic harbour offering a great number of activities among them are the traditional maritime festivities such as the Shrimp feast in the autumn or Sailor’s pilgrim at the weekend of Pentecost.
Many artists are still attracted to Honfleur today and they stand all around the port painting those beautiful buildings and the sea activities.
