Troyes (Aube)
Troyes, once the ancient capital of Champagne, is a sheer delight! It is a lovely medieval town of timber-frame houses, narrow streets and a beautifully preserved historical centre.
Troyes lies conveniently in the heart of Aube en Champagne. The city is graced with magnificent medieval and Renaissance houses, narrow streets lined with half-timbered and wooden-frame building, a Gothic cathedral, some marvellous churches, 16th century squares, a system of boulevards and some excellent shopping opportunities.
The historic city centre of Troyes is shaped like the cork of a Champagne bottle, with a rectangular body outlined by tree-lined Boulevards and a rounded top circled by the Seine river. The two sectors are separated by a canal.
In 1524, much of the town was destroyed by the Great Fire. The present wooden houses date from the reconstruction around 1530. In order to protect the town from more fires, the wooden houses were covered with a greyish roughcast called stucco. Thereafter corbelled constructions were prohibited, because they narrowed the distance between houses and constituted real fire-traps. In more recent times the buildings have been bought back to reveal their original beauty, shape and above all colour. Many of the houses have become restaurants and have maintained their original structure and decoration.
Since Louis XII, in the middle ages, decreed orphanages should to be self-financing and The Hopital de la Trinité became the first institution to start making knitted stockings, Troyes has become a leading centre for hosiery and knitwear. It is also a paradise for shopaholics with its 100 factory outlets offering huge discounts on designer goods.
A new system of self-guided walking tours with audio-guides has been introduced by the Aube en Champagne Tourist Board in Troyes. This is a completely new equipment system fitted with location by GPS (Global positioning system) technology. Visitors can now be guided round by an electronic device which provides each visitor with an audio commentary. This allows visitors to explore destinations at their own pace and be provided with information as they go.
Once you have exhausted the museums and ancient churches you could head out to the area of ‘Les Grandes Lacs’ which lies to the east of Troyes. This is a vast nature park containing the Forest of Orient a dense forest of marshes, lakes and nature reserves popular for activities such as water skiing, sailing and fishing.
