Newly Restored Character Cottage in Catalan Village

Llauro is a delightful village in the foothills of the Pyrenees. It has a beautiful church, a friendly shop, an occasional bar and a school with a playground and is about 25kms from the coast. The historic town of Ceret, where Picasso once lived, is 15 minutes away. The Mediterranean with its sandy beaches is only forty minutes away and Spain is even closer. The house is less than an hour from Perpignan and Girona airports.

About Llauro in Pyrénées-Orientales, Languedoc Roussillon

Shopping and eating out

The friendly village shop has fresh bread every morning as well as other essentials. Ceret, with its thriving café culture, has a couple of supermarkets and a wide range of other shops. The restaurants around La Place des Neufs Jets are generally good and Les Feuillants, while more expensive, is recommended. Fourques, a slightly larger village than LLauro, about ten minutes away, has three or four ‘caves’ including the local cooperative which all sell very drinkable wine. For sea food, the restaurants at Port Vendres are excellent as is the fish market on the quay. There are plenty of restaurants in Perpignan. The Casa Sansa near La Place des Loges in Rue Fabriques Nadal is among the best.

Culture

The region is rich in Romanesque architecture. The abbeys at Serrabone and St Martin du Canigou are terrific and the castles at Queribus and, particularly, Peyrepertuse are, if anything, even more spectacular.

The museum of modern art at Ceret has some work by Picasso, Chagall and Tapies among others and the Dali museum at Figueres is within easy reach. Another place worth visiting is Maillol’s house and studio on the outskirts of Banyuls sur Mer.

There are always plenty of concerts, films and exhibitions in Perpignan. Look out for the listings in the local papers, L’independent and La Semaine.

There’s a flea market every Sunday morning at Le Parc des Expositions in Perpignan and look out for Vide Greniers (car boot sales) which are always on the go in villages round and about.
There are a hundred or so books in the house including novels and guide books.

How To Get To Llauro in Pyrénées-Orientales, South of France and the Riviera

Many enjoy taking their time driving the length of France. Others prefer to take advantage of the increasing number of budget flights to both French and Spanish airports. In France, Perpignan is about 40 minutes away. Carcassonne and Montpelier about 90 minutes away and Toulouse is about a 2 hour drive. In Spain, Girona is about an hour away and the drive to Barcelona airport takes about two and a half hours. Car hire is available at all the airports. For the final part of the journey by road head to Ceret and follow signs to Llauro.
