Home description

Where is it

Charente-Maritime

La Cotonne is a delightful cottage in a quiet location situated amidst the vines but within easy walking distance of the village centre, (200 metres to the boulangerie) it makes an ideal location to relax and unwind. The village of St Thomas de Conac also offers a range of facilities including a grocery shop, bakery, butchers, Post Office, bar/restaurant, hairdressers, village hall and riding stables. From the garden there is a view of the Gironde Estuary and Medoc beyond which is especially stunning at sunset.  The beaches at Meschers sur Gironde, St George de Didonne and the busy town of Royan with its wonderful promenade, marina and market are close by, as is the pretty and historic village of Talmont.  There are several large supermarkets all within easy driving distance. Fresh oysters and mussels can be bought from the village square on Sunday mornings.

The cottage has been extensively renovated and sympathetically updated to provide comfortable and modern accommodation on two floors for up to 4 persons. Tables, chairs and a barbecue are available to enjoy relaxed meals on the patio.

The Charente-Maritime has a mild temperate climate thanks to the Gulf Stream, which embraces the coastline; this combines with the second highest number of sunshine hours in France (after the Cote d'Azur) to give temperatures that reach the high 30s in July and August.

With only a 15 minute ferry trip across the Gironde from Blaye you will find yourself in the Medoc, where you can visit renowned chateaux and savour the delicious world famous wines of the region.  The busy towns of Saintes, Cognac and Pons are all within easy driving and are all well worth a visit.

Ground Floor:

First Floor:

On the first floor, headroom is limited through the doorways but as the owner is 6’4’’ there should be no problem for guests; the bedroom ceilings are however of normal height. The windows are low down in the bedrooms, this is just a word of warning for very small children, however there are shutters on all the windows for added safety.

About the location

St Thomas de Conac offers the amenities of a bar, cafe, and shops, including a co-op which stocks a large range of foods and wines.  For bigger shops Mirambeau is close by offering a supermarket and a market selling fresh produce on Saturday mornings. The town of Jonzac has a good covered market, as well as pleasant shops, boat trips on the river, a huge leisure pool on the outskirts, an open air lakeside leisure complex, a casino, restaurants and a thermal spa. Fresh oysters and mussels can be bought on the village square in St Thomas de Conac on Sunday mornings.

Close to the Gironde estuary with its pretty ports and inviting restaurants. The nature reserve at Vitrezay is 10 minutes drive and offers spectacular views across the Gironde and provides walking and cycle paths along the estuary to the pretty fishing harbour at Port Maubert. During the summer months a ferry service operates from Vitrezay both across and along the estuary.
