La Florette is a large country villa on 2 floors, sleeping 10 people (+ cot) in 2 double and 3 twin bedrooms. The large swimming-pool is 11 x 5 ms, with a paddling-pool.  The gite has a front terrace, lawn and field, together with a back garden. 2 barbecues. La Florette is situated 100 yards from the river Aude and 8 miles east of Carcassonne in the Minervois plain.

The historic city of Carcassonne is the second most visited place in France.  The largest fortified medieval city in Europe, it stands magnificent on its hill 150 metres above the river Aude.  Restored in the last century, it is a dream of the perfect medieval city with its three kilometres of ramparts, thirty-five defensive towers, its moat, Viscount's castle and basilica. 

There are several excellent restaurants in Carcassonne itself and many more in the surrounding area.  You will find most of them written up by earlier visitors in the house’s travel journal.  Good open-air markets are held at least once a week at Carcassonne, Lezignan, Mirepoix and Revel, and the frequent village jumble sales ‘vide-greniers’ bring out a huge range of wares with many bargains. 

The Minervois enjoys the Mediterranean climate with dry, warm summers and mild winters.  For house-hunters it offers a variety of small villages in the plain or on the hillsides, each with its own character and community. 

 

 

Accommodation detail

La Florette is well decorated, furnished and equipped throughout.  Linen and towels are provided free, except for sunbathing and lying on the beach. The house is centrally heated. Electricity and heating are free in the late spring, summer and early autumn. Heating costs are negotiated at other times. A cot is available.

Ground Floor 

• Kitchen - is all-electric with a 4-ring electric double oven cooker, microwave, dishwasher, ample fridge space.  The kitchen door leads out to the back garden.
• Living room - a large, south-facing room with beamed ceiling; satellite TV, radio/CD/cassette player, many books and cassettes, comfortable seating. 
• Dining room - seats 10 people with ease.  Its doors open on to the front terrace and lawn. 
• Double bedroom  1 - large room
• Separate WC and washbasin.

First Floor

• Double bedroom 2 - with shower and washbasin en suite. This room looks towards the back garden and the river
• Three twin bedrooms - these look over the lawn towards Mt. Alaric and the Corbieres hills
• Bathroom - with bath, shower, bidet and washbasin
• Separate WC
• Shower room - with shower, basin and wc. The washing machine is situated here and there is access to a second washing maching elsewhere on the premises.

Outside

The front terrace leads on to the lawn which is surrounded by mature trees.  There is a separate dining area under a pergola near a barbecue. 

Beyond the lawn, the swimming-pool is set in its own enclosed, landscaped area, some yards away from the house for safety. The swimming pool is private and exclusive to visitors to La Florette. It is securely fenced and not overlooked.  It is 11 x 5 ms., with a paddling-pool and cascade in one corner.  There is a wide patio around the pool with ample seating.

Beyond the pool there is a field for ball games and spacious, secure parking.

About the location

Floure is situated in the Minervois, an area well known for its excellent wine.  Chateau de Floure offers a magnificent restaurant set in beautiful grounds.  To the south of the village lie the Corbieres, a scarcely populated range of hills well worthy of exploration.  To the north rise the Montagne Noire and the National Park, the last bastion of the Massif Central.   

Several historic cathedral cities are within easy reach, including Montpellier, Beziers, Castres, Albi, Narbonne, Perpignan, Toulouse and St. Pons de Thomieres.  Access to the autoroute is at Trebes 3 miles away, and from there it is a quick drive to Narbonne and the Mediterranean beaches at Gruissan and Narbonne Plage – or a 90-minute drive to Toulouse.

Additional price information

• There is a £50 surcharge for single-week bookings to cover partially the extra cleaning costs.
• £50pw will be charged for access to the swimming-pool in May or October when it is normally closed.
• Each week is charged the rate for the month in which its first Saturday falls. Rates are not 'per person', but rather for the use of the house.
• Electricity costs are included in the rent during the summer months. At other times, other arrangements may be negotiated which may entail meter-reading etc.
• We do not require a damage deposit, trusting our visitors to respect the effort which went into making this property so comfortable and welcoming.
• A provisional booking may be made but it must be confirmed or cancelled within a week of being made. The deposit is payable on confirmation of booking. The balance is payable 6 weeks before your holiday. A sterling or euro cheque is acceptable, payable to Mr. & Mrs. Jay and addressed to 11 Moray Place, Glasgow G41 2BA. Please let us know if you wish to pay by bank transfer. In the event of a cancellation, the deposit will be returned only if the period is re-let, minus any advertising costs incurred. A cancellation after the payment of the balance will incur the loss of the deposit and balance.
• The telephone accepts calls from anywhere, but outgoing calls are restricted to the local area. We cover telephone costs. Visitors must inform us beforehand if they intend to use the telephone line for internet access, so that we can agree coverage of the dial-up costs.
• Ten (+cot) is the maximum number of people allowed to stay in the house at any one time.
• Changeovers are normally on Saturdays, but off-season we can be more flexible in this regard.
• We expect visitors to clean and do washing in the course of their holiday and not leave piles of dirty washing when they leave - the cleaner has enough to do in her six hours.
• We expect all our visitors to leave the house clean and tidy. Visitors are asked also to let Roger, our handyman, or ourselves know if they find anything broken or not working, so that we can put it right.
• No smoking is permitted within the house.
• We do not permit pets into the house, and visitors are asked not to allow cats to enter the house lest they cause damage or lest later visitors are allergic.
• The travel cot is in one of the twin bedrooms. We can provide at least two pushchairs and a high-chair on prior request.
• We shall send you one or more copies of the kitchen-door key before the beginning of your holiday. Please send them back to us in the stamped, addressed envelope on your return. Keys to other doors are to be found in the house.
• The normal arrangements are that visitors arrive at the house after 4.00 p.m. on their first Saturday and leave before 10.00 a.m. on their final morning.
