Manor House, Four Gites and Pool in 16 Acre Estate near Royan

Tim and Amanda Walsh invite you to take a holiday at La Flotte, a tastefully restored Manor House and four gites set amongst 16 acres of private grounds. Situated in the heart of the micro climate of Charente Maritime with 2700 hours of sunshine a year and are surrounded by vineyards and sunflowers.  

The property is located in a protected wildlife and wild flower reserve (a paradise for bird watchers and nature lovers) and the local countryside is ideal for cycling and walking. Although La Flotte offers tranquillity and breathtaking views, it is within minutes of shops, restaurants and the pretty harbour of Mortagne, and is also well placed for visits to Cognac, Saintes, Bordeaux etc.  

There are four gites to let, sleeping from 2 to 6 people. All properties have their own garden areas with table and chairs and barbecue. Each kitchen includes hob, oven and microwave, new dishwashers and all the usual crockery and implements. There is a separate laundry room with an automatic washing machine and an iron. High-speed internet access now provided and UK TV Freeview channels and DVD players in all gites.

Under our ownership,  further restoration has been completed in 2010 and 2011 and all four gites refurnished with new bathrooms, new beds and bedroom furniture, comfy new sofas in the sitting rooms, soft furnishings throughout and re-equipped poolside area.

To save the hassle of shopping and cooking for your first evening at La Flotte, we suggest you opt for a home-cooked welcome dinner on arrival in your gite and a breakfast basket for your first morning.  Dinner will be ready and waiting for guests arriving between 4pm – 8pm at 15 Euro for each adult and 7 Euro for a child.  Your three-course meal includes main course, pudding and cheese with a bottle of good local wine and bread. 

Our traditional French breakfast basket, available for any morning during your stay is priced at 4 Euro for each adult, 2 Euro for each child (up to the age of 12).  Delivered to your door, it's ideal for your first morning especially, leaving you free to shop at your leisure later.

In addition, freshly prepared mid-week meals are also available to order and enjoy in the comfort of your own gite (Tues-Thurs).  There’s a choice of either a vegetarian or meat option for main course, plus pudding, cheese, bread and a carafe of red or white wine from a local vintner.  24 hours notice needed.

Gites rental prices include bed linen and bath towels (beach/pool towels not provided).

Good sandy beaches are only 15 minutes away and further sporting facilities are within easy reach (golf, tennis, horse riding, watersports, go-karting, sea and fresh water fishing).

About Mortagne Sur Gironde in Charente-Maritime, Poitou Charentes

Located about 25km south of Royan, the La Flotte estate with four character gites and private pool is on the outskirts of the harbour village of Mortagne-sur-Gironde.  We are about 15 minutes drive from jct36 of the A10 autoroute, via the larger village of Gemozac.  The port and quayside are about 7 minutes drive from La Flotte.

Shopping - La Flotte is situated less than a mile away from the friendly village of Mortagne sur Gironde which has shops for the everyday needs and a beautiful port with restaurants and bars. A larger supermarket is available at Gemozac, about 10 minutes by car.

Beaches - The nearest beaches are 10-15 minutes up the coast at Meschers - these are small coves with safe sandy beaches. Another 5 minutes further up are the huge sweeping beaches of St George and Royan, each with loads of space and some watersports and full safety patrols. North of Royan is the Grand Cote - several miles of sandy beaches with some local beach patrols and naturist bits (if you pardon the expression). Finally a little further (say 40 minutes from La Flotte) is the Cote Sauvage, again good sandy beaches but where the rollers come in off the Atlantic - a favourite with the surfers.

Kiddies attractions - usually the pool, games facilities, the beaches, and loads of space to run around in are plenty, but if you want a special trip out to entertain the young ones then there is a zoo up the coast at La Palmyre (large and very highly recommended), the aquarium at La Rochelle and a bit further away the impressive Futuroscope at Poitiers.

Places to visit (alcoholic)

• Cognac - well worth a trip for the town but throw in a tour or too around the distilleries and the day flies by!
• St Emillion - a popular trip out to see a beautiful town and some good wine tours.
• Bordeaux - an impressive city plus possibly the world's most important wine centre.
• Bordeaux and Medoc wine towns - well worth a bit of a tour and the odd case or two.
• Pineau Charentes houses - Pineau is a local speciality being an aperitif wine fortified with Cognac. Our neighbours on two sides have free degustation with no obligation to buy (although it is difficult to resist).

Other places to visit

• Saintes - an old Roman city complete with amphitheatre and a collections of old churches and abbeys. Also some good shops and an excellent market daily.
• Royan - as well as having a massive beach Royan has good shopping with an excellent market.
• La Rochelle - very pretty old town and port with superb shopping and restaurants. The indoor food market is particularly luscious.

How To Get To Mortagne Sur Gironde in Charente-Maritime, South West France

La Flotte may be reached within 4 hours or so from St Malo and is around an hour away from the airports at Bordeaux and La Rochelle served by the budget airlines EasyJet, Ryanair, Buzz, FlyBE and BMI Baby. We are about 25 minutes drive, south of Royan and approximately 10 km from the larger village of Gemozac.  La Flotte is located on the A6 road which leads to the pretty village of Mortagne-sur-Gironde.
