♦ Non-smoking, Suitable for children, Unsuitable for wheelchair access
♦ Barbecue, Garden, Scenic views, Swimming pool (shared use)
Domaine de la Briquerie consists of 2 period detached stone cottages (1830) and a restored former hunting lodge. It is set in 2 acres of landscaped garden with scenic views over the river and surrounding countryside. It is situated on the banks of the river Vilaine and is adjacent to a long distance cycling/footpath.
The buildings share a central courtyard, heated swimming pool with roman end, indoor Games Room with table tennis, pool, babyfoot, exercise equipment and offer lots of holiday facilities for all the family both indoors and out. The south facing swimming pool has sun loungers and is security fenced. Outside dining areas, barbecues and furniture are also provided. There is also a fenced childrens play area with swings, slide, etc. There are also many family and baby friendly extras.
These period detached cottages are next to a long distance foot/cycle path along the river Vilaine and enjoy a virtually traffic-free and tranquil location. They offer high quality and well equipped accommodation yet with typical French period furniture they retain a romantic and authentic atmosphere.
The ferry port of St Malo is about 1hr 20 mins away and Caen is under 2.5 hrs easy driving. Rennes, Nantes and Dinard airports are all within 1.5 hrs. Nearby are forests, hills and pre-historic sites of standing stones. Both wild and rocky coastline as well as attractive sandy beaches can also be reached in 45 mins.
The nearest village is Langon (1.5 kilometres) and you can easily cycle to get your fresh bread and croissants for breakfast. Also in the village is an excellent butcher, general store, pharmacy and baker. Langon also has 2 bars and there are 3 restaurants within easy reach along the quiet river road.
Whatever the time of year we are sure you will find this a very calm and peaceful setting perfect for relaxing, unwinding and getting away from it all. Evening meals offered Saturday, Tuesday and Friday.
Rose Cottage is detached, with full central heating (radiators) and open fires, and has been totally renovated (including re-wiring and plumbing) in 2002. The laundry room with washing machine, tumble drier and sink unit is shared with Vine Cottage.
During Autumn 2004 the owners have completed an Orangerie off the courtyard that is open to guests and makes a great place to either eat lunch/dinner or just read a book and enjoy the garden.
Rose Cottage has 3 bedrooms and sleeps 6. The ground floor is open plan. This cottage faces west.
Patio area with table and chairs is directly outside the cottage.
The grounds of 2 acres are open to guests and include lawns, flower borders, rockeries, etc.
Central courtyard has sunny and shady spots for outside dining. Tables and chairs for both cottages can be moved to anywhere in the garden. Around the garden are additional benches and tables under trees, etc. Plenty of sun loungers with and without cushions
Pool is heated, fenced and landscaped. There are 4 barbecues available and outdoor games such as boules, swing ball, giant snakes & ladders, treasure hunts.
There is hard standing parking within the property.
The immediate area surrounding Domaine de la Briquerie is one of rural beauty with gentle hills and woods. The river Vilaine is slow flowing and forms part of the inland route from the Atlantic to the English Channel via Rennes. During the summer there is plenty of interest with the boats that use the route. The river is teeming with wildlife and there are coypu as well as the rarer otter. There is also lots of interesting birdlife with egrets, kingfishers, buzzards and Hoopoes which can all be seen locally. If you are lucky you will also hear the nightingales sing during the late spring early summer. Situated on the river bank there is a long distance foot/cycle path outside the gate and bars/restaurants can be found within 5 kilometers either way.
La Gacilly – home of Yves Rocher and within 20 mins drive. This town is very picturesque with lots of interesting shops, artisans, bars and restaurants also a factory shop of Yves Rocher products. There is a map of La Gacilly in the Cottage. (A good trip to combine with Rochefort en Terre although it will be hard to choose which restaurant to have lunch at.)
Rochefort en Terre - within 40 mins drive it is a small medieval city perched on a rocky spur and surrounded by deep valleys within a 30 mins drive. There are lots of shops, art galleries, restaurants and other places of interest.
Loheac – within 15 mins drive this village is the home of the largest motor museum in France with over 300 vehicles of all ages. There is also a go-kart track and the village centre has some very interesting period bars and restaurant.
Redon – market on Monday in the centre, confluence of two major rivers and a pleasure port. Some very nice cafes/restaurants in the old town on the island. A very large hypermarket Leclerc in Redon great for shopping to take home.
Pennestin –within 1 hrs drive this is on the coast and is famous for its beach ‘mine d’or’ these are sand cliffs that shine like gold in the sunshine – the swimming is good here but expect crowds in August. The mussels here are very famous and tasty and they can be bought from the quayside at Trehiguier. There is a map of the area in the Gite
La Roche Bernard – very charming town where the Villaine meets the sea. It is like Dartmouth and is very picturesque with the boats and the ancients buildings climbing up the hillside. (A good place to combine with Pennestin)
Le Jardin Anglais, Porte de Roche, Langon (3 kilometres) - originally created by Alan Mason and featured on Channel 4s Gardens without Borders the Jardin Anglais has changed ownership and is now open again to the public. It is about 6 acres of very varied garden with an outstanding Rose garden and a series of water gardens. It is open every day except Friday and charges a small admission
Megaliths at St Just - within 15 mins drive these fascinating standing stones are well worth a visit.

We had a very enjoyable week at La Briquerie. Helene and Michael made us feel very welcome and were always on hand to recommend places to go and days out as well as advising on building a good barbecue!. Rose Cottage was well equipped and very comfortable. The location was very peaceful and there was always plenty to do, whether cycling down the river, chilling out by the pool or watching the sun set in the beautiful garden. One week certainly wasn't enough and we'd love to come back sometime! Thanks for your hospitality.

Our stay at this property was one of the most relaxing times I have had in quite a while.
The owners, Helene and Michael, are undoubtedly the most attentive hosts that one could want and their property is comfortable and well catered for in every regard.
The cottage boasts the ability to utilise bicycles, should one feel energetic enough, to just cycle along the beautiful river that lies on the opposite side of the where the cottage is. The surrounding area is peaceful and beautiful and there is even an area for the children to play in with a trampoline, swing, slide and sand pit. There is even a boat to utilise, again should you be feeling energetic enough, on the river and Michael was willing to help us with this should we have wanted to go for a row.
Unusually for a self catering holiday Helene offers to cook dinner 2 to 3 times a week and I must say the food that she cooked for us tasted superb and even better still it was set out for us on the patio table where we ate in the evening sun - fantastic!!
I cannot praise Rose Cottage enough as it ticked all the boxes for me and my family.
Well done Helene and Michael - oh, and of course the dogs :)

We stayed a week at Rose Cottage and the whole family had a great time. The swimming pool, the table tennis, pool table and the bikes provided great fun for the whole family - granddad included. The riverside situation is idyllic and makes for very easy cycling. Perhaps next time we'll get round to taking the rowing boat out too!

The cottage and location are wonderful, we enjoyed a really relaxing stay in a well equipped cottage. My 5 year old son enjoyed every second, whether it was swimming in the pool, playing table tennis and pool or watching one of the many dvd's and videos that Helene and Michael have provided.
Helene and Michael were always on hand to offer advice and ideas for day trips and local facilities.
I would highly recommend a stay and a row down the river!!

The property was really beautiful and in a lovely location. It was very comfortable for 6 people and there was plenty to do. The games room was fully stocked and the pool was fun too!
The surrounding area was very peaceful, right by a river which is a popular fishing spot. You can easily cycle to a few of the local villages on the bikes provided. Some of the larger historic towns and the coast are not too far away as well.

We liked all the different equipment available for us to use, especially the trampoline. The local environment was super and easily accessible from the gite including boat trips and bike paths.

This property at 200 years old is older than New Zealand where we live. It has a relaxing charm of its own and together with the help and care of our hosts, made our stay with our party of - very enjoyable.
