Home description

The Auberge de la Riviere is set on the banks of the gently flowing Dordogne river overlooking 4 chateaux and one of the historic sites of the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) between England and France.

The stunningly romantic village of Beynac, which rises dramatically from the valley floor and which was once the home of Richard the Lionheart, will enchant and captivate you at every turn, from its narrow medieval streets lined with soft honey coloured stone houses, shops, art galleries and restaurants to its magnificent Chateau, perched high on top the cliff, which has majestically watched over the Dordogne valley since 1150. You may already be familiar with Beynac and the surrounding area from watching such films as 'Chocolat', 'Joan of Arc', 'The Musketeer' and 'Timeline'. This is one of the loveliest stretches of the Dordogne river and a 'not to be missed' stop for any traveller.

There are many festivals, fairs and markets throughout the year. From mid July and throughout August there is a Music and Drama Festival in Sarlat with open air concerts and plays, street entertainment and busking musicians who will amuse and delight you.

During the busy summer time there are also numerous Night Markets and Gourmet Feast Days where it is possible to try the food from the region, watch it being cooked before you and then sit and enjoy with a glass of local wine in the open air dining areas. During the autumn and winter months you can visit the truffle markets and search for the famous Cepe mushrooms which grow in abundance in this fertile region. In the village markets, the fruit and vegetables, nuts, and mushrooms of every description bear witness to the region's self-sufficiency in food.

Restaurant and Internet Cafe

The restaurant has been designed in a traditional French style with an intimate dining room and a beautiful south facing terrace for al fresco dining. There is a small à la carte lunch menu, a daily 3 or 4 course bistro menu and in the evening  a wide à la carte menu gastronomique plus vegetarian options using the freshest local ingredients cooked in the simplest ways for the best possible prices. All accompanied by a selection of local fine wines and cheeses. The Café de la Rivière is recommended in many international guide books; 'Guide de Routard', 'Lonely Planet' 'Rough Guide' and Rick Steves 'Guide to France'.

At street level there is also an internet cafe serving sandwiches and beverages where residents can access the internet, print and make photocopies.  There is also a facility to transfer pictures from digital camera memory cards to CD.  Residents have 1 hours free access which can be used in the internet cafe or through wifi in the rooms.

About the location

The central Perigord Noir location allows you to visit the nearby attractions very easily, whether it be the world famous prehistoric cave paintings at Lascaux, or the World Heritage Classified Vezere Valley with its many Stone Age relics and caves dating from 20,000 years ago.

Maybe, you might like to visit the vineyards of Bergerac and St.Emilion, or the perfectly preserved medieval town of Sarlat and some of the many fortified castles and Bastide towns which are all within a short drive from Beynac. If you wish to go Hot Air Ballooning as the sun rises over the surrounding castles that can be arranged too. It is all here for you to do whether its drifting down the river in a canoe or eating at a Michelin starred restaurant, we will try our best to arrange it for you - even the sunshine.
