This 200 years old house originally owned by a wine grower has like many in the village has its own wine cuves and even productive vines in the garden. Recently refurbished to a high standard, including the installation of double-glazing and full central heating, it retains the essence of a village home.

Mailhac is a small working village in the heart of the Minervois wine growing area of the Languedoc. More than 1000 years old it currently has about a population of 400 inhabitants. It  has a Marie, a bar, post office, library, school, and a number of places to buy wine. There is a nationally recognised archaeological site with artefacts dating from pre-Roman times; access is limited at present, however, the government has allocated funds to develop an archeological park.

Major attractions of the area are: the Canal du Midi, the historical Cathar village of Minerve, the Black Mountains, the Lac de Jouarres for water sports and swimming, and Carcassonne Cíte a world heritage site. The Pyrenees can be reached in 2 hours,  Barcelona in 3 hours and the coast at Narbonne is 40 minutes.

About the location

The Region: Mailhac is in the department of the Aude (11) but close to the Herault (34).  It lies north of Narbonne and mid-way between the ancient cities of Béziers and Carcassonne. The gently undulating Minervois is crossed by a number of rivers and the world famous Canal du Midi. It lies between the Black Mountains and the National Park of the High Languedoc to the north and to the south by the wild Corbiere.

Eating Out:  There is a good selection of restaurants offering regional cuisine at lunchtimes and evenings. We can provide information and assist with reservations.

Flora and Fauna: Wild flowers in the spring are a wonderful sight and include many varieties of orchid. Around Easter it’s a local custom to pick wild asparagus to have with an omelette, but of course you need to know where to look! On walks and cycle rides it is possible to see birds, wild boar, lizards and snakes, coypu and the occasional human!

Historical Sites: Cathar history and events feature strongly in regional tourist information. There are numerous chapels of exquisite design and location, ancient villages whose circular design is a unique feature of the south west of France. The walled cité of Carcassonne is of world renown but also an enjoyable place to shop, eat and enjoy events as part of its annual July festival.

Culture: The people of the Languedoc are passionate about their land, history and culture. They celebrate these continually through local fetes, markets, music and dance, language, creative arts, sport, wine and food. Visitors  have the opportunity to participate throughout the year in well publicised activities and events.
