Home description

A well equipped stone house on the edge of the peaceful medieval village of Finestret, overlooking the little river Lentilla. There are beautiful views of the Pyrenean foothills around Mont Canigou from the large roof terrace – ideal for eating out or sunbathing.

Within 5 minutes’ walk is a series of natural swimming pools, where the valley narrows into a dramatic gorge. Enjoy great walking into the hills or cycling from the village, surrounded by orchards and vineyards.

Finestret lies between Vinça, with its swimming lake and beach, and Prades, home to the renowned Pablo Casals music festival. Reach the Mediterranean within 45 minutes, & the Côte Vermeille towns and beaches – such as historic Collioure or Le Racou – or the Costa Brava in an hour. Alternatively, head inland for the mountain ski resorts around Font Romeu, by road or the Petit Train Jaune.

About the location

Finestret is 4 km from the village of Vinça, with its fresh water swimming lake and beach, and cafes, restaurants, shops, bank and pharmacy. The small town of Prades, home to the renowned Pablo Casals music festival is 10 km away, with weekly markets, supermarkets and other facilities. 5 km further on is the medieval fortified town of Villefranche, from where the Petit Train Jaune offers you a spectacular open top service to the mountains and ski resorts around Font Romeu.

Towards the coast, you can reach Perpignan, capital of Roussillon, in 30 minutes, and the Mediterranean within 45 minutes. The Côte Vermeille towns and beaches – such as historic Collioure or sandy Le Racou – are within an hour, as is the Spanish border. The Costa Brava, and the beautiful towns of Cadaques and Figueres are not much further. Barcelona is about 2 hours away. The region is dotted with Cathar castles, museums, vineyards and orchards, churches and monasteries, and feels truly Catalan.

The light has attracted many painters – the Fauvists, Picasso, Dali – and their work can be found in the museums and galleries. Alternatively, simply enjoy the excellent local wines and fruits, and regional cuisine.

How to get here

Cheap flights are available close by via Girona and Perpignan, and also Montpellier, Carcassonne, Barcelona and Toulouse (Perpignan is closest - approx. 40 minutes). Nearest mainline rail station is at Perpignan - there is a local station in the next village (Vinca). Motorail delivers to Narbonne (approx. 1 hour away).
