About Bagnols Sur Ceze in Gard, Languedoc Roussillon
The substantial town of Bagnols-Sur-Ceze is 10 minutes drive away. The town has a central 'old' area with a spectular market on Wednesday, and a smaller one on Saturday. The town has all the facilities you can wish for . There is a new Intermarche and a new Champion is opening to replace the rather tired old one. Of course there is a range of bakers and Chocoletires.
Cafes, bistros and restaurants are numerous, varied and often very good value. The fixe prix menus, especially at lunch are just too tempting
The town has a range of bars and a smattering of nightlife.
Wednesday is the big markets day with literally hundreds of sales sellingjust about everything. Organic an local produce is well represented.
The local tourist information are really helpful and will often 'phone around for you to ensure that places are open or that their opening times remain the same. Here you can also find details of maney of the local cultural activies. Some of these are put on by the local Marie and include concerts rectials and theatre.
The town also give you access to a range of dry cleaners, video/dvd rental, keys cutting/shoe repair etc etc.
There are two nice children's playgrounds surrounded by trees and gardens. The latest cinema releases are shown at the local cinema.
If you like art there is the Musee de Peinture Albert Andre, put together by one of Renoir’s friends. It proudly boasts being the first such museum of contemporary art anywhere in France. It burned down with all its art inside in 1924. Firemen were on the scene immediately, because unfortunately it was they who had accidentally started the fire during their ball!
A second chance
This story does have a happy ending. Andre sent a distress call out to the art community and they responded by re-filling the new museum with a whole host of works by artists such as Bonnard, Marquet, Matisse, Picasso, Signac, Gauguin and, of course, his friend Renoir. The end result was even more impressive than the original.
Around the area are many fantastic places to visit for the day. Pont Du Gard is close and the house is on one of the Cotes Du Rhone wine routes. Accross the Rhone is Chateauneuf du Pape and the beautiful Roman town of Orange.
On a smaller scale are liitle hamlets and villages with the village life centred around the bar and the church.
The house is also by a marked footpath that winds up and down the hills and valleys in each direction.
Very close by is a stables that offer 'hacks' and /or lessons for all ages and abilities.
And of course the neighbours are all wine makers with around ten domains within a 2Km radius.
The Cote du Rhone has a number of 'wine trails'. For the sheer variety and quality of wine it is a 'must-do'!
The beach is around a70 minute drive and well worth the effort. Beautiful sandy beaches and the blue water of the Med.
