About Marseillan in Hérault, Languedoc Roussillon
Marseillan
- The town has over 12 excellent restaurants, ranging from the basic but tasty Pizzeria upwards and all are within walking distance from the house.
- Noilly Prat Distillery – Produced in Marseillan, the distillery is an interesting place to visit. Noilly Prat, first produced in 1843, is a popular French aperitif.
- The Etang de Thau – The Etang has a tradition for oyster & mussel farming, providing the area with a rich source for food & wealth. It is possible to take a short tour of the oyster & mussel beds. The local produce of this area goes hand in hand with the regional wine produced.
- On Bastille Day (July 14th) the whole of the town erupts into a day of festivities. There are parades, stalls, the Fête du Capelet (greasy pole festival) and music and dancing in the streets.
- Marseillan Plage is two and a half miles from Marseillan town, with a beach that stretches from Cap d'Adge in one direction to Sète in the other, a distance of some sixteen kilometres. This is a free beach with fine golden sands and shallow warm waters. The beach is for sun-lovers and those who enjoy the natural environment. It is reputed to be one of the cleanest French beaches on the Mediterranean.
Sète – 30 minutes
At one end of the Etang de Thau is the charming town of Sète, which developed in the 17th century as a major port on the Mediterranean Sea. It is a town of canals, has beaches on the Mediterranean and connects the Etang to the sea. Many excellent fish restaurants line the quayside. Overlooking the town and Etang is Mont St-Clair, on the summit of which is a chapel dedicated to those who venture on the sea.
Béziers – 20 minutes
Its centrepiece being the allée Paul Riquet, a plane-tree shaded promenade created in honour of the famous engineer who built the Canal du Midi. The promenade is bordered by a large choice of restaurants and pretty cafés and every Friday the whole promenade comes alive with vibrant flower stalls. The town’s streets are punctuated by intimate squares with ‘hidden treasures’ of bars, shops and cafés. Be sure to visit the imposing Cathédrale de St-Nazaire, built in the distinctive Romanesque style and which can be seen from miles around. Its 14th-century cloisters leads into formal gardens and the views down across the countryside are superb. You can see over the River Orb to the Oppidum d’Ensérune, with the Canigou Mountain in the distance.
Pézenas – 15 minutes
Pézenas is a town with some exceptional architecture. Compact and all within a leisurely stroll, there are many sights to discover and fine houses to glimpse among the wide and narrow streets. A medieval shop front, the confining narrow streets of the Jewish ghetto and second hand bookshops. Renaissance carving, elegant doorways all evidence of the town’s history as the seat of local government in the 16th – 17th centuries. The dramatist Molière visited here in the 1650’s helping to establish Pézenas as host to musicians and actors. There is also a fantastic market every Saturday morning, with many locally produced wines, cheeses, seasonal fruits etc on sale.
Montpellier - 45 minutes
Montpellier, the capital of the Languedoc Roussillon, is truly a capital city. A vibrant and lively city where old meets new, with universities dating back to 1220. Place de la Comédie is a lively square at the heart of Montpellier and links the city’s old districts with the new. The 19C façade of the theatre serves as a backdrop to the fountain of the Three Graces. From le Place de la Comédie there is a beautiful promenade lined with plane-trees where Montpellier residents come in summer to stroll among the terrace cafés or listen to musicians playing in the bandstands.
Canal du Midi 240 km long and stretches from the Atlantic Coast to Marseillan, where it reaches the Mediterranean. It is a structure unique in the world and is wonderful for walking in the shade of the riverside trees, cycling, fishing and canoeing. You can hire boats for day trips, stopping at many tucked away restaurants along the way.
Carcassonne – 1 hour
The Citadel of Carcassonne is the most perfectly restored medieval walled city in Europe. Stepping out of a picture book it looks like the most perfect film set. The massive ramparts and fairy tale turrets appearing out of the landscape are dwarfed only by the sheer size of the complete Citadel. The second most visited site in France next to the Eiffel Tower. Shops, restaurants exhibitions, staged battles all within the walls of a city whose origin’s date back to 2nd century BC.
Cap d’Agde – 10 minutes
A lively, cosmopolitan resort, with broad avenues, bordered by gardens of colourful oleanders. The marina is a wonderful place to visit on a summers evening, where you can sit at one of the quay-side restaurants with your wine or cocktail and watch the constant flow of visitors, listen to music or have your portrait created by one of the many quay side artists. Should you be lucky enough to visit on Bastille Day, don’t miss the spectacular firework display. Cap d’Agde also has a fantastic water park with slides for all ages and ability, beautiful sandy beaches, which offer numerous water sport facilities and lovely beach bars, a golf course and tennis courts.
Vineyards galore
More wine is produced in the Languedoc than anywhere, with a great number awarded ‘AOC’ status. Drive in and taste without obligation – sometimes you will find a treasure and a bargain and always a great experience and an opportunity to meet the locals. You may even find yourself on the Via Domitia, an old Roman road still in evidence and carving through the vineyards from Italy in one direction to Spain in the other.
Inland - 45 minutes
There is easy access inland to Lake Salagou and the foothills of the Cevennes.
