Attractions in the Dordogne Region

Lac de Gurcon A short distance (4km) is the Lac de Gurcon. This lake complex was built about twenty years ago by all the local communes. It has two large lakes, one has a beach area with beach type cafes, bars and restaurants. There are areas for fishing and quiet paths which are excellent for walks, and also two very good tennis courts, and a boules area

Villefranche-de-Lonchat The village has a great deal of history associated with it dating back to the 12th century. There are two churches dating from the 14th century and a museum has been established in the Hotel de Ville to illustrate the local history. Villefranche has a pretty tree lined village square, two cafes, restaurant, boulangerie, butcher, post office, pharmacy and a general store. Beautiful Countryside In all directions there are picturesque country lanes winding through forests, fields of sunflowers, wheat, maize or cattle, sheep and goats, ... and only the occasional tractor or car. The area is superb for walking or cycling

Further afield

Montpon-Menesterol The nearest large town is Montpon-Menesterol (16km) where there is a colourful street market every Wednesday morning. Branches of major French banks can be found as well as a wide range of high street shops and an excellent supermarket with fuel filling station

Castillon-La-Bataille Castillon-La-Bataille (10km) has a market every Monday morning and is the nearest of the towns situated along the bank of the river Dordogne. The town is famed for the battle against the English that ended the 100 years war. Every summer the town puts on a magnificent re-enactment of the battle involving hundreds of the local people, this spectacular is well worth a visit.

St. Emilion St. Emilion (15km) is an exceptionally beautiful medieval town with steep hilly cobbled streets running between ancient limestone buildings. It is famed for it's production of some of the finest red wines in France. In the 8th century a hermit from Brittany, Emilion, settled in a cave that contained a natural spring. Over the next 500 years this cave was hollowed out and enlarged and is now the largest monolithic church (hollowed from a single rock) in France. Today this chapel overlooks the main square

Ste Foy La Grande Ste Foy La Grande has a market every Saturday and is lovely town to visit with the Dordogne river running through it.

The River Dordogne The River Dordogne flows through the region and there are many places to visit like villages that nestle by the river bank with wonderful restaurants serving local produce including foie gras, confit du canard, cepes, truffles, prunes and walnuts.

The large town of Perigueux and City of Bordeaux can both be reached within one hour.
