Where is it

Sarthe

Dating back to the 17th century, this charming village house lies in the peaceful countryside of the beautiful Sarthe valley, in the Pays de la Loire region of France. Whether you are looking for a relaxing holiday, where you can experience the gentler pace of rural French life, or looking for a base to explore places such as Le Mans, Angers, Tours or the chateaux of the Loire Valley, La Tourelle will provide the ideal 'home from home'.

The village of Avoise, with a population of just under 500, sits on the bank of the River Sarthe in the department of Sarthe. The village grocer’s can supply all your daily needs, including lovely, fresh, crusty bread. There is also a bar. The church of St Sulpice dates back to the 17th Century. The village also has an ancient Tour à Sel where salt was stored.

Just 10 minutes drive from Avoise is Sablé sur Sarthe. Sablé offers a wide range of shops cafés and restaurants as well as a twice-weekly market. There is a cinema and frequent concerts of all kinds.

Accommodation detail

La Tourelle nestles in a quiet lane near the centre of the village and is one of the oldest houses in the village. The original bread oven in the courtyard would have been used by the whole village to bake their bread. The house is built into the cliff side and two large, interconnecting caves provide perfect storage all year round. The large, sunny courtyard provides parking for one car. (Extra parking is available in the nearby municipal car park, free of charge).

The house has three bedrooms to sleep 6 people, two shower-rooms (one with toilet – there is also a separate toilet), a large living room and family kitchen with dining table and chairs. A stone spiral staircase links the ground and first floors and each room retains its original beams. The house has been decorated and furnished to a high standard while retaining the character of the property.

Outside:

A sunny courtyard, planted with shrubs and flowers is perfect for ‘al fresco’ meals. Table, chairs and a barbecue are provided. Sunloungers and folding chairs are also available for making the most of the sun. The caves house two mountain bikes, which you can use to explore the local countryside and surrounding villages. Additional bikes can be hired from the grocer's.

This property is an interesting example of accommodation in a typical, quiet French village. It offers English visitors those things that they would expect in terms of excellent showers with good pressure and lots of hot water, a fully equipped kitchen, comfortable beds and large lounge.

The cool cave in which is stored the bar-b-q and bikes leads out into a small courtyard garden bordered with plants. The owners leave everything they use and visitors need within the property and have a working relationship with the grocer who can deliver supplies prior to arrival.

The location is 20 minutes south of the varied city of Le Mans and a very good centre for a rural holiday.

This property has everything you need from the Kitchen to the bathroom. It is spacious, cosy and has a home from home atmosphere. The cave at the rear of the property was quaint and our teenage grandchildren loved this. The local people are very friendly and there are lots of places to visit. It has a river where you can go fishing which my grandson enjoyed, my granddaughter enjoyed a picnic in the park and some of the park areas cater for BBQ's. There is a local shop for small items and the larger items you can get from a short journey approximately 15mins.  You are about 1 hour away from Le Mans (major city) and just outside of Le Mans is the race track/Museum which is well worth a trip and they do family tickets reasonably priced.

If you are looking for something scenic there is an Abbey nearby and it is breathtaking.

Although you are inland there are places you can go where they have man made lakes which have sandy areas where you can go swimming, fishing, cycling etc. This is good especially if you have young children and they are free so no unforeseen charges.

I would recommend this Gite to anyone who wishes to visit France and doesn't want to make the long journey south.

We had a wonderful holiday in La Tourelle. It's a lovely spot, beautifully quiet, just what we needed and the people were so friendly and helpful. We felt we got to know the area really well.

Hopefully we might be able to return some time.

La Tourelle was a fantastic holiday home that had all the equipment necessary to make your stay as comfortable as possible. It is a great base for visiting other towns such as la Mans, Angers, etc. There is a supermarket withing 20 minutes drive away that sells everything you could possible need! plus there are lots of local markets to visit too. La Tourell is a typical French cottage built into a cave and is full of character. It is set in a tranquil village, that has a good village shop within 2 minute walk that you can get you daily bread, and other essentials. We had a lovely holiday.
