La Fontaine Rouillee is a truly tranquil location, ideal for a barbecue, relaxing with a book and a drink, watching the bird life, sketching the scenery or strolling beside the nearby river. For the more energetic try following the marked cycling, pony trecking or rambling trails through the nearby forest or canoing down river.  Situated in a rural setting in two acres of grounds overlooking the river valley and forest, means there is plenty of private outdoor space for each gite, with individual barbecues and patio furniture provided. This really is a chill-out zone where the stresses of everyday life can easily be put aside to enjoy the slower pace of Breton life.  However, the gites are close enough to bustling market towns, good quality restaurants, a wide variety of historic sites, two large inland lakes or the beautifully scenic north coast beaches and golf courses to provide plenty of options for everyone. 

Our gîtes at La Fontaine Rouillee have been carefully renovated to create comfortable and well equipped homes that are suitable for year round use.   We have tried to ensure they are places we would chose to stay in ourselves.  Each property has total privacy, but we are close enough to answer any queries you may have to help you make the most of your stay in this beautiful and friendly area of Brittany. 

We are happy to accept bookings throughout the year from 3 nights up to 6 months and offer significant discounts for longer lets during October to April. We have no restrictions on arrival days or times (subject to existing bookings). Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

Our charmingly updated traditional Breton cottage is a well appointed and comfortable two bedroom gîte for up to four people, with an optional cot and high chair also available by prior request.  All the spacious accommodation is on one level, which is approached up a few steps from the enclosed, mature, south facing grounds.  The property is completely suitable for year round occupation and is maintained to a high standard by the english owners who live near by.

The accommodation comprises:

• Hallway
• Kitchen/diner - off the hallway, this roomy dual aspect  room is fully equipped for four people to both cook and eat in comfortably; a comprehensive inventory with everything from a salad spinner through casserole dishes to a chicken rotisserie supplied! 
• Sitting room- opposite the kitchen/diner is a separate light and airy sitting room with chestnut flooring, sofas, very efficient wood burning stove, television and DVD, board games and a well stocked bookcase. 

Located either side of the central hallway are the two parquet floored bedrooms which have working shutters, ideal if you want a lie in. Both bedrooms have wardrobes, chests, mirrors and chairs and a choice of summer or winter weight duvets.  Either room will accommodate an optional child's cot-bed (140 x 60 cm).

• Twin bedroom - which is bathed in the morning sun.
• Shower room - very spacious with large heated towel radiator and a chair. 

All the rooms are fitted with modern, efficient electric panel heaters plus fans available in warm weather which, along with the wood burner and working shutters ensure that the property is warm and comfortable throughout the year.

Outside

The mature sunny garden has a multitude of bulbs, flowering shrubs and several fruit trees together with views across open countryside to Loudeac Forest.  There is a built-in barbecue, bench seat, table and chairs to enable you to make the most the outside space, the boundaries of which are fenced, tree bordered or walled creating an enclosed private garden for the exclusive use of cottage guests, also contains their rotary clothes dryer to one side of the garden.

A separately accessed lockable cellar is available for guests to store their bicycles, walking boots, fishing rods, golf clubs etc; this also houses the cottage laundry area with washing machine, drying and ironing facilities.

About the location

La Fontaine Rouillee is a beautiful, tranquil hamlet with views over the nearby Loudeac forest (which is freely accessible by the public), and within easy walking distance of the River Lie, which is graded 'excellent' for trout fishing. There are a number of marked trails for walkers, cyclists and riders in the immediate area, passing the historic stone crosses which are a feature of this region. 

Plessala, our nearest village, can supply all your day to day shopping needs along with fishing permits for the trout lake from the mayor’s office and delicious lunches from the Crêperie. There are plenty of good local restaurants and some excellent traiteurs in the vicinity, including an award winning gourmet one. There are 2 village bars along with a nearby wine bar which features occasional live music during the evenings.

Le Site de la Roche au Cerf is an ancient stepping stone river crossing found in the valley directly below La Fontaine Rouillee, where the shallow waters are ideal for cooling off in hot weather and lovely to sit beside with a peaceful picnic or portable barbecue.

2km downhill Le Vaublanc is the site of an old forge, now occupied by a religious community who bake several varieties of delicious bread the traditional way and are pleased to show their wood fuelled ovens to passers-by stopping for a chat and to buy a loaf.

Weekly markets at Loudeac, Lamballe, Ploeuc-sur-lie, Pontivy and Josselin ensure a wide range of fresh produce and local crafts are always available along with the opportunity to soak up the atmosphere of real Brittany.  There are also regular vide-grenier markets in the region packed with all sorts of interesting brocante items.

Both Dinan a beautiful medieval walled city with and Val-Andre the fashionable beach resort with a world class golf course, are just a 35 minute drive away; these are musts for any visitor to the area.  Also within easy reach of La Fontaine Rouillee are the smaller coved beaches and fish market at Erquy and the castle and surrounding nature reserve of Forte du Latte at Cap Frehel which are both good days out.

How to get here

Plessala can be reached in one hour from the ferry port at St Malo or Dinard and Rennes airports, where hire cars can be arranged.  The port of Roscoff, and Brest or Nantes airports are all less than two hours drive; while the Normandy ports of Caen and Cherbourg are around 3 hours.  Regular TVG trains run between Rennes and Roscoff making stops at St Brieuc and nearby Lamballe, hire cars can obtained in both places or the latter is within cycling distance.

Main roads throughout Brittany are well signed, remarkably traffic free and easy to negotiate.  If you let us know your arrival point we can recommend the best route here and we will supply detailed instructions for navigating the rural roads leading to La Fontaine Rouillee.
