Ille sur Tet nestles alongside the River Tet about midway between the magnificent mountains of the Pyrenees and the beautiful Mediterranean resorts such as St Cyprien Plage and Collioure. This is the region of the Roussillon, locally known as French Catalonia. Perpignan Airport is just 30 minutes drive away. Other airports within one and a half hour`s drive from us are Carcassonne, Bèziers and Gerona (just over the Spanish border). All airports are easy drives away. There is also a way to get public transport from the airports to our house.
Our house is situated in a quiet residential side street about 3 minutes walk from the centre of town. Our friendly neighbours go about their daily lives in the typical southern French fashion. In days gone by our house belonged to a rich fruit farmer. It is big, bright and airy. Its large rooms have individual features, shuttered windows, high ceilings and marbled floors.
We have two separate apartments for rental, both on the ground floor. They have been renovated to a high standard, making them into ideal holiday homes for those who like to do self catering in comfort, whilst also being close to shops, bars, bus stops and a range of restaurants. They also make excellent long term lets for those wanting to explore the area outside the summer holiday season. Please-note that our Winter rentals begin on September 1st and end on May 31st. They are kept at this great value price on a rental in excess of three months.
One of our apartment sleeps two, and the other is a two bedroom, two shower-room apartment for four. Each apartment has its own front entrance and individual sun-terrace to the rear, bordered by sweet smelling plants and herbs. There are shared laundry facilities in the central garage of the house. We have WIFI internet access for those visitors who wish to bring their own laptop. There is room to park a car outside each apartment front door.
Inside each apartment, visitors feel "at home" and very comfortable. There is no need to bring anything to do with household cleaning for all things such as washing up liquid, machine washing products and bathroom cleaning materials are all provided. It`s easy to get to the shops and banks and restaurants as they are just a few minutes walk away. The town swimming pool (open July and August) and tennis courts are a ten minute stroll away. Medievil architecture is well preserved in the old walled town and all around the outskirts there a variety is stunning scenery. Sandstone cliffs overlook the beautiful River Tet and the awesome Mount Canigou, towers high into the deep blue sky. Within five minutes walk you are out into the peach orchards. In Winter, there is usually snow on the Pyrènees and the nearest ski resort to our house is about 1 hour 30 minutes away
This large two bedroom, two shower-room apartment is ideal for a family or two couples. We have also had single couples staying who have loved the luxury of a shower-room each and lots of wardrobe space. It provides home from home comforts. It is light and airy and is maintained to a high standard.
A travel cot and baby bath is available on request.
Ille sur Tet is a fine example of a French/Catalan market town. Within its centre, there is a Medieval walled sector, where local people still go about their lives in a fashion passed down through generations. It is situated away from the main tourist areas but only 20 minutes west of the city of Perpignan. It offers visitors the chance to experience daily life in this fascinating region of France. Market days are Wednesdays and Fridays.
There are easy road and rail links from Ille sur Tet to Perpignan, the Mediterranean coast, Spain and up to the Pyrenees mountains. The town is surrounded by peach, nectarine and apricot orchards and where the orchards end the vineyards begin! It has as its backdrop, the majestic Mount Canigou, which rises nearly 3000 metres into the sky. Wherever you go in Ille sur Tet, Canigou will be watching over you. The local people pay homage to their mountain every summer solstice.
One of the local places of interest and within walking distance of our house, is the famous rock formation called 'Les Orgues', where time and weather has shaped the sandstone so that it resembles organ pipes.
Ille-sur-Tet is just one of the many pretty towns and villages in the area.
Eus, purportedly, the sunniest village in France and designated with “Villages de France” status, is about 15 minutes drive away. Other lovely villages are Castelnou with its well preserved 10th century medieval chateau, Vinca with its vast water reservoir and man-made swimming lake, Millas and its traditional olive oil mill and Molitg-les-Bains, famous for its thermal treatments. The largest town in the area, Thuir, has a cosmopolitan feel to it and also boasts many good restaurants.
The area is steeped in the Arts. This region is famous for its religious architecture. The Priory of Serrabone and St Michel de Cuixa are two fine examples. Further afield are the Cathar Castles, which loom out of the craggy rocks in the Corbiere mountains. Prades, a town just 12 kms away is where Pablo Casals, the cellist, made his home. A fortnight’s musical celebration is dedicated to his memory every summer. Prades also hosts one of the largest weekly markets in the locality. Fine examples of modern art can be found in Ceret and also in Collioure, where Picasso and Matisse found the light and colours such an inspiration. Figueras, the home of the Dali museum is just 45 minutes drive away.
