Home description

Peacefully situated on the edge of the winegrowing village Embres et Castelmaure in the Languedoc region of Southern France, this spacious and well-equipped house is the perfect location for a relaxing holiday. The "Cave cooperative" in the village is renowned for its excellent wines.

La Ferrache 's large private pool is surrounded by south facing stone terrasses that offer a stunning view to the Corbières hills. The beautiful walled garden with stone paths contains a variety of mature trees and shrubs, including olive trees and oleanders that provide shade and privacy. With tiled floors, exposed beams and tastefully decorated throughout, the house offers accommodations for 6-8 people mainly on one level. The large living room has a fireplace, TV, DVD and stereo equipment, a well-stocked library with books in English, French and German, children’s books and games. There is a fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher, fridge/freezer, microwave, gas stove top, electric oven, coffee maker and toaster. Washing machine and dryer are located just off the kitchen. There is an additional shower room and WC in the basement.

A short drive from airports at Carcassonne, Perpignan, Toulouse and Montpellier, Embres et Castelmaure is located in the heart of the Corbières. It is a traditional wine growing village surrounded by beautiful hills dotted with vineyards and inviting for walks. The area enjoys an almost perfect climate with over 300 days of sunshine annually, marked by long hot summers and brief, mild winters. The Cathar castles of Queribus, Peyrepertuse and Villerouge-Termenès and the medieval monasteries of Lagrasse and Fontfroide, examples of the area’s rich history, invite to sightseeing nearby. The blue beaches of the Mediterranean (Leucate, La Franqui, Port la Nouvelle) with their tourist activities and the 'etangs' (lagoons) famous for their pink flamingoes and other water birds are just a short drive away.

About the location

La Ferrache is located some 30 km west of the Mediterranean in the heart of the picturesque Corbières hills, between the ancient cities of Narbonne and Perpignan.

Embres et Castelmaure – the local picturesque village goes back to Roman times and was originally made up of two villages. Castelmaure was located up on the hill, and only some walls of the castle remain. Embres enjoys daily bakery deliveries and is visited several times a week by local vendors selling produce, sausage and meat on the village square. The thriving Cave cooperative of the village is renowned for its wines. A small post office opens every weekday afternoon for a few hours.

St Jean de Barrou – 2 km, has a bakery (open 5 days a week) and a small supermarket that sells produce, meat and other essentials.

Durban - Corbières - 6 km, is the main town of the area and has a supermarket, petrol station, bakery, bank, doctors, pharmacy and a restaurant.

Fontjoncouse - 8 km, has a two-star restaurant run by chef Gilles Goujon.

How to get here

The house can easily be reached by car (autoroute A9, exit Sigean), by air (Ryanair from London/Stanstead to Perpignan or Carcassonne, all major airlines fly to Toulouse) or overnight rail connections to Narbonne. Across the Spanish border, there are the Girona (150 km, Ryanair from London/Luton) and Barcelona airports (230 km).
