Beautiful Old Farmhouse with Pool in Idyllic Rural Setting

Traditional stone built farmhouse with private swimming pool and large garden. Originally built in 1818, the main building has been renovated incorporating the stables and hay barn to make a large 6 bedroom family house. Many of the original features have been retained throughout, including exposed stone walls, wood paneling, beams and a beautiful old  fireplace with bread oven.

The house is south facing with beautiful views towards the Cevennes mountains in the south and Livradois forest and Cantal region to the west. It is set in the peaceful countryside of rural Auvergne and the local people are warm and friendly.

It can accommodate up to 12 people and as well as the swimming pool there is an adjoining barn with a table tennis table, darts board etc and a large garden for children to play in.

It is also an idyllic spot for a couple or small group just to read, sunbathe and relax and to enjoy the local food and wine.

There are excellent restaurants in the area, historic buildings to visit including the Abbey at Chaise Dieu (International Music Festival held here in August) and plenty of activities such as tennis, riding, golf, kayaking nearby. The region is famous for wild mushrooms which can be found locally.

It is 90 minutes from Lyon airport.

Holiday Accommodation at Le Grangeon

Ground Floor:

  • Splendid, spacious living room (previously the 'etables') with vaulted French windows opening onto the courtyard, garden and views beyond. Tiled throughout and elegantly furnished with open stone fireplaces at each end.

2 steps lead up to the

  • Original farm kitchen with period fitted cupboads and traditional style pine units to house an electric fitted hob, oven and double sink. A pantry adjoins the kitchen with a dishwasher, washing machine, fridge/freezer and double sink. There is also a 'cave' behind the kitchen built into the rock for wine storage etc.

In the adjoining barn at right angles to the house on the ground floor is

  •  1 large double bedroom
  •  Outside cloakroom with WC and washbasin
  •  Open games area with table tennis table

First Floor:

  • 5 double bedrooms - both main bedrooms have double beds and en suite bathrooms. One has a door opening to an ornamental wrought iron balcony. Bedrooms 3 and 4 have twin beds and bedroom 5 is very large with 3 single beds and French windows opening out to the rear of  the house.
  • 3 fully fitted bathrooms

On the first floor of the adjoining barn is

  • Open games area with darts board and table football. There is  also a table and  chairs  (an  ideal breakfast spot )

Garden and Pool:

The protected courtyard at the front of the house is totally private and ideal for sunbathing and eating outside. The oval filtered swimming pool 8 metres x 4 metres is set in its secluded part of the garden beyond the courtyard. The area is enclosed by a fence with a lockable gate for the safety of young children. The pool has an underwater light for night swimming and will be cleaned and regulated for you during your stay. A solar powered water purifier with ionization is used which is an environmentally friendly system of keeping the water pure and clear while minimising the use of chemicals.

About Usson En Forez in Haute-Loire, Auvergne

Le Grangeon farmhouse is in a tiny hamlet in the Haute-Loire about 45 minutes north of Le Puy and 40 minutes south west of St Etienne. The area is extremely peaceful with lovely countryside and warm friendly people. There are beautiful views towards the Cevennes in the south and the Livradois forest and Cantal in the west. The region is famous for wild mushrooms which can be found locally.

There is good local shopping and lively markets in the nearby villages and there is a supermarket 10 minutes away. There are some excellent restaurants in the area, many beautiful historic buildings to visit, and some interesting museums including one about the French Resistance at Estivareilles and one dealing with the evolution of Boules at St Bonnet.

How To Get To Usson En Forez in Haute-Loire, Central France

St Etienne is the nearest airport 40 minutes away. Lyon airport is 90 minutes and there are daily flights from London and Manchester. The TGV from Paris stops at Lyon airport. Car hire is available at both airports.

To get to Le Grangeon from Lyon airport follow the motorway to Givors and St Etienne. Then follow signs to Firminy and St Bonnet le Chateau.

The journey by road from Calais takes about 7 hours. Follow the eastern autoroutes via Reims to Lyon.
