Two Bedroom Gite in Tréziers with Pool and Stunning Panoramic Views

Stunning panoramic views of the Pyrenees mountains, the Cathar site of Montsegur in the middle distance. Tranquil, rural villages and country towns. Peaceful rural location; 8kms from Mirepoix, regarded as the most beautiful Bastide town in the region.

Set in a large one acre garden, with lawns and terraces of roses, irises and daylilies surrounding a lovely pool.

There are wonderful views across rolling countryside, great for walking, with lots of footpaths and our maps to guide you!

From the pool a path leads past a leafy wooded area, past a small vegetable garden, to a mature orchard of cherries, apples, pears, peaches, apricots and medlars.

Weather in late autumn and even through into January can be brilliantly sunny but cooling off, and sometimes spring is quite wet. We usually open the pool in June, unless summer is obviously coming early. In September, while the weather can be beautiful, the water temperature usually drops and we close the pool up if we are stopping swimming. These off-season times are great for walking and enjoying the quieter times.

The holiday cottage adjoins the owners house but has its own patio for alfresco meals and barbecues. From local historian Robert Faure we learned somethimg of the origins of the house name. La Borde de L'Hercule translates as 'the smallholding of The Hercules'; apparently during the 19th century 'montagnards' - people from the Pyrenees, would travel with a bear, then native to the mountains. A regular challenge, almost always lost, was to wrestle the bear for money. The occupant of this house took the challenge, won the money (and refused a double-or-quits) and was thereafter called The Hercules!

Treziers is a tiny agricultural village set in beautiful rolling countryside with excellent local walks, a nearby bar in Moulin Neuf, and lots of shops, cafes, restaurants and festivals in Mirepoix.

A selection of comments we've extracted from our Guestbook for 2012...

An enjoyable week despite rain at the beginning, although it did give us the opportunity to catch up with our reading. Interesting orchids found on the ridge walk and a delicious cold beer at Moulin Neuf as a pit-stop. - Rosemary & David (Thirsk UK)  June

Ros & Andy worried they had squatters – we didn’t want to leave ! It’s wonderful in so many ways, and in our opinion far exceeds the website listing. Waking up and lying in bed looking at the Pyrenees was special every morning. - Dawn & Ian (Peterborough UK) June

Mixed weather but had a really good week. Didn’t do many tourist sites but walked on 3 days from the gite – lovely countryside around. - Carole & Tim (Stokesley, N. Yorks UK) July

This is our third year visiting this area but this is our favourite property so far. We know many of the tourist attractions so this time we were looking for activities for the children (11 & 8). Horse riding twice,a boat trip in the underground cave and we tested ourselves on the tree adventure park. - Fionnuala, Nathaniel, Louise, Simon. (Paris, France) August

Had a great two weeks. The gite is superb with stunning views. The area is lovely with lots to see and do. Certainly the best place we have been in France for a summer holiday. - Simon, Susan, Charlotte & Emily (Derbyshire UK) August

Our love of France never diminishes and we have thoroughly enjoyed reacquainting ourselves with this lovely area. A most relaxing holiday in beautiful scenery, wonderful gite with fantastic all-round views…we hope to return. - Gill & John (Shrewsbury UK) September

About Treziers in Aude, Languedoc Roussillon

We are in the village of Tréziers, a green & fertile area, just over the hill from the baking summer heat of the coastal region. A network of small lanes connects villages and small country market towns on the Aude/Ariege border. This is a district that stretches down the valley of the L'Hers, past Camon, listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France, through beautiful apple orchards to the small town of Chalabre, and on to Puivert, its lake and castle. This is a great area for walking or cycling.

The Pyrenees are very accessible at an hour and a half drive away, and offer sensational scenery, mountain walks, and skiing in Winter. Activities such as rafting on the Aude and Ariege rivers are available for the intrepid.

There are many  markets; the one at Mirepoix (Mon) is unmissable and others not far away are uniquely different. In summer several villages have night markets; those at Puivert and Leran are especially good, combining eating and drinking, shopping and music. Mirepoix has festivals all spring and summer, and the Tour de France seems to always pass excitingly through this area.

The nearby Lac Du Montbel has water sports activities, horse riding, and excellent bike hire, deliverable to our door, for exploring the wonderful 30km Voie Verte cycle path nearby (see Amenities). During summer, even the tiniest village has its own welcoming Fete.

To the north is the winegrowing area of the Malpere, and tastings are possible in many places. The town of Limoux is the capital of the other nearby wine region, producing Blanquette, the oldest of sparkling wines.

There are many and varied excellent restaurants we can recommend, reflecting the region's cuisine  and all within a 10-30 minutes drive.

The Aude is of course, Cathar country, and all of the major castles are within easy access by car, followed by an uphill walk to view the sites.

Carcassonne, with its fabulous medieval Cite, is only a 45 minutes drive from here and provides a great day out.

See Local guide and map for information on nearby towns and facilities.

How To Get To Treziers in Aude, South of France and the Riviera

45 minutes drive from Carcassonne, taking the D119 to Mirepoix.

Our two houses sit well away from neighbours - no clever photo angles here! Our garden is full of flowers, and in an acre of ground we have shady and sunny places to sit, and a barbecue for outdoor eating. We have puts lots of photos on this page, so you can see exactly where everything is.

The pool is shared, but only with us, and we rarely swim and sunbathe in the heat of the day, so you'll have it to yourselves almost always.
