Where is it

Dordogne
 

This four bedroom traditional farmhouse with its deceptive large rooms is situated in a quiet hamlet which used to be a collection of buildings forming a monastery farm. Our guests have exclusive use of our 10m x 5m swimming pool and large garden. The children have their own space in the house where we have a studio, which is attached to the house,  with a large games room with snooker table, table football, games and books. The mezzanine in the studio is the fifth bedroom.

The house is about 200 years old and has been designed to be very cool indoors when it is hot outside. The fig tree garden with its patio with table and chairs is perfect for dining al fresco.  The courtyard is large and ideal for a game of boules. 

The surrounding area is mostly agricultural with sunflower fields and expanses of open countryside. The quiet location and country lanes makes it ideal using the cycles we provide our guests for cycling through the sunflower fields. The area enjoys hot summers and mild winters. Close by are golf courses, horse riding, lakes with beaches for swimming and a river for canoeing and fishing. 

We have been spending our holidays in France for many years - in the mountains and on the west coast of France to placate 2 boys who enjoy their sporting activities. Based on our holidays in different types of accommodation and having a large ski apartment, which we rent, we believe we know what facilities and a comfort a family requires for their holidays.

About the location

La Sauvanie is situated in a quiet hamlet 3kms from Verteillac, a bustling village that serves the local community with a supermarket, bank, post office, hotel / restaurant, butchers, boulangerie and a number of bars. The local store which is a mini supermarket as well as a mini B&Q and Comet is open Sunday morning. There are a number of good restaurants in the surrounding area.

The surounding countryside is agricultural and this is clearly demonstrated in the summer where the local farmers rotate their corn and sunflower crops.

Riberac is 15 minutes away and has a Tourist Office and large supermarkets. The Tourist Office is well worth a visit but we do have most of their brochures at the house. There is a very large and busy market every Friday. 15 mins from Riberac is La Jemaye where there is a large popular lake with a beach, canoes, restaurant and childrens play area. Angouleme, capital of Charante is a 30 minutes drive where the old town sits on the top of the hill with its churches, monastries and government buildings. In the alleys there are some delightful restaurants and bars. Perigueux, capital of Dordogne is 40 minutes drive and is similar to Angouleme offering restaurants and bars in their old city quarters. Both cities have excellent golf courses Perigueux being easier as Angouleme's is on a hill, but with spectatcular views. For those wanting a trip to the beach then Royan for beaches safe for children and the La Cote Sauvage, north of Royan for surfing and body boarding. All the beaches are supervised by lifeguards but La Cote Sauvage requires added awareness. Both are about 2 hours away.

Also in the region and close by are National Park woodland with pleasant walks, canoes to hire in Riberac, bikes to hire in Vertaillac and stables where horse riding is available. There are also a number of historic chateaux, and visits to vineyards and caves - all can be found in the brochures.

How to get here

La Sauvanie is off the quiet road between La Rochebeaucourt and Verteillac. 

Angouleme is served by the GTV is 30 minutes away.

The local airports are Bergerac (60mins), Bordeaux, (90mins) and Limoges (100mins).  Taxis and car hire available from the airports. 

Approximately 8 hours drive from Calais via Rouen or Paris by motorway.
