Home description

Le Moulin de Latour - a seventeenth century mill house with converted adjoining barn beside the mill stream - sleeps twelve and offers an enchanting rural retreat with pool, perfect for a dozen people – two families, two or three generations, a group of friends.

The mill house (Le Moulin) and the barn (La Grange) each has three double bedrooms, and they have been modernised to the highest specification to provide a comfortable and flexible holiday home set in an acre of leafy gardens and an 11 metre pool with pool house. Lying in a valley close to the River Lot, the property is characterised by the gentle murmur of the mill stream, the doves from the nearby church and the evening tolling of the Angelus bell at 7pm (some say this is the signal for an aperitif…).

As you enter the property through traditional wrought iron gates, you see the Mill House ahead of you, the old mill wheel now a shapely table, the windows facing over the sunken rose garden by the mill stream. The rose garden and parterre takes advantage of the south east aspect, with willow, fig and apple tree, lying along an old curving stone wall. The Mill House and Barn are linked by a  pretty little courtyard planted with scented herbs and geraniums, with old stone out buildings, creeper clad and golden and scarlet in autumn. In front of you are the shuttered double doors to La Grange, an old stone barn of fine proportions which lies right beside the mill stream.

French doors within La Grange lead through to the terrasse, a spacious wooden balcony with wrought iron balustrade and pergola built over the mill stream, a spot where many a meal has been enjoyed, a view across fields to the oak covered hills at the foot of the Causse.

The garden at the back of the barn is shady, with mature trees framing the open grass beyond, leading to the swimming pool, and views of the walnut orchard and the valley beyond. The gardens, both formal and informal, offer sun, shade, tranquil sitting areas for reading or drawing, tables for eating and drinking, space for games and, right by the orchard, the lovely lavender framed pool.

Le Moulin de Latour comprises of The Mill House and The Barn let together as one holiday accommodation with 6 bedrooms sleeping 12.

The Mill House

The Mill House is newly restored and takes advantage of the traditional proportions of local architecture: built over cellars (with remnants of the old mill workings), with high ceilings, tall windows with wooden shutters, and the large stone chimney breast. The owners have created two bedrooms and a bathroom in the tall characteristically curved Quercy roof.

Ground floor

Access to the ground floor is by 5 shallow steps, making the ground floor suitable for people with limited mobility (one of the owners spent 3 comfortable weeks there on crutches with a broken leg!) Le Moulin has central heating and a wood burning stove.

• Day room - a spacious, airy south facing room
• Kitchen / dining / sitting room - with wood burning stove. The chimney breast frames a range cooker in a modern kitchen and provides a lovely focus for the dining end of the room.
• Bedroom 1 - large double bedroom with polished wood floor and en suite shower and WC. 

First floor

• Bedroom 2 - a twin bedroom
• Bedroom 3 - double bedroom - in roof space with exposed timbers
• Bathroom - with shower and WC.

The Barn

The adjoining stone barn, la Grange, is also newly converted, to provide a clean stylish interior, taking advantage of the original window openings, the honey coloured stone walls and the original oak timbers, set off by a beautiful modern Italian tiled floor.

Ground floor

• Entrance - the front door of the Barn opens onto a long elegant room, with full 13m of the barn, with French doors opening onto the Terrace.
• Kitchen/living/dining - large through room (13x4m) with modern kitchen antique oak refectory table and tiled floor with underfloor heating.

Up a polished wooden staircase to: 

First floor

• Bedroom 4 - with double bed and looks out over the stream
• Bedroom 5 - twin bedroom which looks out over the little courtyard between the Moulin and the Grange
• Bedroom 6 - with twin beds and this room takes in the curving green length of the garden, the pool and the valley beyond - 'une vista formidable'.
• Shower room/WC
• Bathroom/WC

Outside

Large windows in the Mill House look over the rose garden and mill stream, with views of the oak covered hills beyond.

French doors in the Barn/La Grange lead onto the Terrace by the mill stream and through into the long back garden - le Pre - and the swimming pool. The  Terrace  has a large wooden table and seating for 12.

The rear garden is spacious enough for badminton, and combines shade and full sun. The gardens have many different sitting areas.

How to get here

• Latour can be reached by road being about 40 km off both the A62 peage via Bordeaux and the A20 via Limoges. Latour is about 5 km from Prayssac, off the D45. 
• The nearest train station is Cahors (30 minutes drive) and the TGV comes to Agen, an hour's drive away.
• The nearest airports are Bergerac (a hour and a quarter) and Toulouse (1.5 hours drive).
• There is also a bus service from Cahors station which goes to Prayssac, where you can get a taxi to Latour for a few euros.
