Where is it

Ardèche

Commanding dramatic views over the Rhone Valley to the French Alps La Mirande sits in perfect isolation on a plateau 700m above sea level. Surrounded by farm land with 6,000m² of private orchard and garden, it is an island of great tranquility. Even though the house is spacious it offers a very warm living situation perfect for two people. The nearest town, Privas is only a 15min drive away and offers everything from country markets to high class super markets.

Accommodation detail

Part of a 200 year old farm complex this renovated barn has an open living concept of accommodation.

The floors of the whole house are tiled in beautiful blue grey tiles heated in winter by geothermal floor heating. This geothermal system also supplies the energy for the hot water reducing electricity costs considerably. There is a wine cellar and work space on the lower level of the building. Plenty of parking is available.

About the location

Located at 700m on a plateau, 2 hours south of Lyon, 15min from Privas and a 2 hour drive to the Mediterranean La Mirande offers you intimate contact with nature, spectactular views and absolute tranquility.

The town of Privas, capital of the Ardéche is a thriving regional centre with super markets and charming local shops. Market days are Wednesdays and Saturdays offering a great opportunity to buy all the wonderful fresh local produce. There are many restaurants in the region ranging from top class Michelin stared establishments to charming local bistros where you eat what the proprietor has to offer on the day. If you prefere to eat at home you can pick up a  famous Picadon goats cheese from the neighbouring farmer and  enjoy with a good Ardéche wine from your local vineyard.

A short drive to Vallon Pont Arch takes you to the touristic centre of the Ardéche and the sensational Gorge de Ardéche. Lyon, one of the gastronomic capital of the world is a 1,5 hours drive away when you feel like more sophistication or would like to visit the Opera or take in a Show. A day on  the beach at Camargue can be enjoyed without any difficulty. The famous ski fields of France are also only a few hours away.

But the main charm of La Mirande is its location. Looking down onto the Rhone valley and across to the Alpes, a place to rest, take long walks and find new energy from the old volcanic rocky soils of the region.

I spent about 8 weeks on this marvellous spot. It s a place where we can recover and let go of stress from everyday life. This energetic landscape gave me inspiration for my art and studies. The quietness gives me space to practise meditation in the nature of this wonderful garden. I hope many people will come and enjoy the space with you, Gray, as well as by their own. Thank You! Claudia

Our arrival was rather fraught as no one was there to let us in. However, we received a warm welcome when the owner arrived half an our later. The accommodation was very well equipped and there was a lot of space. The only area of the property we wen't that keen on was the sleeping area which required care when entering or exiting especially late at night!

The informal meal we were booked into in the next village was one of the best meals we have ever had in France. We think the owner should send everyone there! We were lent maps and guide books which was good. Perhaps the owner should prepare a book of local info to leave in the accommodation.

Overall we had a very positive experience and are thinking of returning soon.
