Home description

Where is it

Finistère

Deep in central Brittany, nestling in the ancient Breton landscape of wooded hills and valleys, steeped in celtic mythology and culture, lies Carhaix-Plouguer. Once the Roman capital of Brittany (Vorgium), it still remains the heart of Breton culture, tradition and music.

Set on the southern edge of the town, Manoir de Kerlédan, a 16th Century manor house, is an oasis of peace and tranquility, lying in 7 acres of its own grounds. From a dilapidated ruin in the mid 1990's, the old house  has been gradually restored, retaining its lovely arches, huge granite fireplaces and lime plastered walls and transformed into a luxurious, comfortable home.

Behind its sculpted facade, dating back to around 1540, lies a warmth of hospitality, where Penny and Peter offer stylish, country house bed and breakfast accommodation in its tranquil surroundings. The bedrooms are large and comfortable, with crisp white linen sheets on comfortable beds and en-suite facilities.

Its grounds, once an overgrown jungle of fallen trees and brambles, have been rescued and replanted with hedges, lawns and gardens. Formal box parterres and pleached lime trees adorn the front and rear courtyards, while the cutting garden and potager provide a bountiful supply of flowers, fruit and vegetables for the household.

Penny, a keen cook, enjoys nothing more than entertaining guests and cooking delicious meals, using our home grown produce and fresh locally sourced food. On sunny summer evenings, we often enjoy aperitifs and meals outside on a table overlooking the courtyard, or on cooler nights a candlelit supper by the warmth of a roaring log fire.

Breakfasts are leisurely and of a continental nature. Freshly squeezed orange juice, croissants and a selection of fresh breads from the local bakery, home made jams, fresh fruit from the garden, yoghurt and local cheeses and hams, plus of course lashings of tea or coffee.

A typical 3 course evening meal might be:

We are licensed to serve drinks with our meals and have a small selection of carefully selected wines and spirits to accompany your meals.

One of the advantages of Carhaix's central position, is the vast choice available if you want to explore the region more thoroughly, with coastal, woodland and river scenery, historic towns, chateaux and abbeys, gardens, culture and music, plus sporting facilities, all within an hour's drive.

Stay a weekend or a week, gather friends and family for a fun, sociable, house party, or take the opportunity for a romantic and peaceful break for two.

Whatever your choice, Manoir de Kerlédan is a wonderful place to leave behind the hustle and bustle of everyday life and recharge your spirits.

About the location

Manoir de Kerledan is located just to the south of Carhaix-Plouguer, Finistere, Brittany.   This unique 16th Century Breton stone manor house in 3 hectares of its own parkland, provides a wonderful calm and relaxing atmosphere.

It is a great base for walking and cycling holidays.

The Nantes-Brest canal passes only some 3kms away linked by the GR37 pathway running along our boundary.  The canal is boarded by tall poplars and yellow irises in early summer and is a wild life haven where you might be lucky enough to see Kingfishers, Herons and Otters which inhabit the banks.  The tow path is an ideal place for pleasant strolls, easy cycling and the odd bit of coarse fishing.

Just to the north of Carhaix lie the ancient mossy woods and granite outcrops of the Huelgoat forests which offer wonderful walks, mushroom hunting in the Autumn and megalithic stones to visit.
