Geneste Petite Grange is part of an ancient farm complex, it is a superbly converted detached stone barn with exceptionally comfortable accommodation for 4 adultsor 2 adults + children  aged 12 or more.

The whole house celebrates our love of wood, craftmanship and attention to detail; all the work of restoration has been done by us, right down to the beautifully polished terracotta tile floors in the kitchen and sitting room - a labour of love.

There is a pretty terrace with a fountain, climbing roses and wisteria, huge glazed entrance doors and private terrace with barbecue and spectacular views, all surrounded by mature terraced gardens, ponds and sitting places. A new "Kiwi Arbour" is the perfect place to see the sunset.

Inside

• Sitting Room: It is comfortably furnished with sofas and a pretty Moroccan double seat.  An  Indian carpet decorates the terracotta floor tiles. The wall are hung with tapestries and art work, plus Moroccan wall lights and a huge hanging lamp all brought back from Marrakesh.  A fireplace of handmade bricks built on an enormous single piece of granite, houses our efficient Jotul woodburner. French windows lead on to an enclosed private terrace. Open plan oak staircase leads upstairs.
• Kitchen: The kitchen is spacious with superb views. It is well equipped with all new appliances - microwave, cooker, fridge freezer, washer, toaster, kettle. It has traditional 19th century French furniture and fittings, handmade dining table and lots of good quality stainless steel cookware and cutlery, porcelain tableware, even a champagne bucket and glasses (A bottle of bubbly welcomes you on arrival..). The walls are finished in creamwashed  boards of local Douglas pine  trimmed with green paintwork
• Bedrooms: The Gallery bedroom has designer built, hand painted furniture and extremely  comfortable double bed. Lots of storage. Romantic drapes fall on to a rustic balustrade; the lighting is Moroccan,  the colours pale green and cream. The twin bedded room has blue hand painted furniture and yellow walls and a wall hanging from Tunisia and  lots of storage.  Panoramic views of the valley and its small villages.
• Bathrooms: The Italian style shower is really spacious with wonderful views of the garden, valley and further over the mountains. The tiles are hand cut from volcanic stone and the furniture made and painted by us. Even the toilet has an interesting view of the orchard, potager (salad garden) and our poultry yard where the antics of our chickens never fail to amuse - and give fresh eggs as well.

Garden/Outside

The woodland garden was made from terracing the mountainside and includes much pretty planting and shrubs and mature trees including numerous walnuts, oaks, etc. There are many attractive paths and features and a spring which feeds the main ponds via a well. The garden sits on top of  the valley views. 

A good quality Le Creuset cast iron barbecue with tools and charcoal is provided, also garden table and chairs, sun loungers, sun umbrella and numerous places to sit, sunbathe and relax.  These include your own private terrace leading directly through the french doors of the gite, plus a second private terrace in the garden where you can enjoy the last of the sun.  This year, we have created another sitting spot, the 'Kiwi Arbour' where these exotic fruit entwine with a grapevine to provide yet another  quiet area.

About the location

The property is surrounded by forest tracks and lanes freely accessible on foot, by bike or on horseback.

The property is located 4 km from   Arfeuilles where you can find your basic shopping (groceries, bread, pharmacy) and a Market every Wednesday.

Supermarkets and all you will need can be found in Lapalisse (20 minutes - Market Day Thursday) or Vichy and Roanne (40 minutes each by car).

How to get here

• By Road: Approximately 7 hours non stop from Calais the major trunk road (RN7) is 15 minutes from the house
• By Air: From Stansted to Lyon (2 and a half hours away)
• By Train: To Vichy, Roanne or St Germain des Fosses (40 minutes)
