Home description

The 19th century, renovated watermill is situated at the river La Petite Creuse. Since there is no industry to speak of in the region and agriculture is small scale, the rivers are clean and unpolluted. There are miles and miles of unspoiled nature. The only sounds one can hear: the whistling of the birds and the sound of the river.

The weir is across the river to divert the water towards the mill-race, ideal for swimming. The river is well stocked with fish and fishing permits can be obtained at the Mairie. Kingfishers and dippers are a daily occurrence.

In spring the most beautiful wild flowers, oxslips,cowslips foxgloves abound, in the wood of the mountain adjoining the mill are bluebells. In autumn the colours are really spectacular.

The former hayloft of the 19th century watermill has been converted into a spacious, comfortable loft for holiday let. It has a private entrance.

The balcony is overlooking the river, island and weir.

The mill is surrounded by 40.000 m2 of land all along the river. The environment is completely unspoilt. Nature at its best.

There are 2 double beds in the loft, a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom and an incredible view through the large windows.

About the location

The Creuse is one of France's best kept secrets. Situated right in the middle of France, 200 miles directly south of Paris, between Indre and Loire to the North, the Dordogne and Auvergne to the South. It is an unspoilt rural area of gently undulating hills, woods, lakes and unpolluted rivers.

The main town is Gueret, 15 miles to the south of Cheniers, with 200.000 inhabitants and a very pretty old centre.

Moulin de Sardeix is 3 km from the village of Cheniers, 12 km north west of Bonnat.

Cheniers has a butcher, baker and a village shop, a restaurant/bar. Supermarkets are in Aigurande, Bonnat, La Châtre, Dun le Palestel.

How to get here

By car: The house is within a days's drive of all major French ports. The Newhaven Dieppe route ( 2 hours) avoids Paris altogether. But Calais and Le Havre are equally good, Calais via the eurotunnel being quick and easy. From Paris one takes the motorway as far as Chateauroux and after that to Aigurande ( 60 km ).

By Air: Ryan Air fly daily from several destinations in England to Limoges, book early for reduced prices. Limoges is one hour from Cheniers. 75 km.
