Home description

Experience authentic French village life in our village house situated in the heart of a gorgeous village called Montlaur, situated in the beautiful wine-growing valley in the Corbieres, in Languedoc. The village is both enchanting and welcoming, boasting its own cafe, small supermarket, bakery, butchers, pharmacy and hair salon! Our village is perfectly located to explore the famous medieval city of Carcassonne, the Canal du Midi, the beautiful villages in the Minervois, colourful local village markets, the Roman city of Narbonne, Cathar Castles, the beaches on the Mediterranean and the playground of the Pyrenees with dinosaur museums, Tautavel man and skiing in winter. We are also an easy 3 hours from Barcelona.

We supply 2 adult bikes, 2 childrens bikes and a car bike rack so you can enjoy some of the fantastic bike riding in the area - particularly the famous, beautiful Canal du Midi.

The village house is a three-storey stone house built about 150 years ago, situated in the heart of the village on the corner of a quiet lane.  We have lovingly renovated our home, enhancing its original charm and furnishing it in the "French country" style - most of these items purchased from local vide greniers (bric a brac and antique markets held weekly) lots of fun if you are a collector! 

Ground floor

• Sizeable entrance / hall way - with large cupboard under staircase ideal for storing suitcases 
• Cosy kitchen/dining room - charming room, beautiful  original brick fireplace, great workable kitchen, bright and cheerful dining room -  the real hub of the house!
• Lounge -  features a "Languedocian" fireplace equipped with an old cast iron wood burner - the room is very cosy and is  tastefully  furnished with loungesuite, armchairs and side tables.

First Floor

• Master bedroom - beautifully furnished with a queen-sized bed, marble-topped set of drawers, antique mirrored wardrobe and bedside tables. 
• Second bedroom - bright and sunny room with two single beds, marble-topped dressing table and side chairs. 
• Bathroom - tiled pentagonal shower with glass door, antique handbasin set in marble,  large attractive mirror and toilet.

• Third very large bedroom furnished with a double bed, writing desk and side tables,  wrought-iron antique couch-bed - a  french door leads out onto the
• Roof-top private terrace (15m²) - furnished with a table and 6 chairs and is a great place to eat, or just relax and enjoy the view over the village rooftops while sampling some of the fantastic local wines.

About the location

Montlaur is a charming village situated in the heart of a wine growing area in the foothills of the Pyrenees. The village has a bar/cafe, bakery, small supermarket, great butchers, pharmacy, and hair salon. There are several restaurants within 10km. Lagrasse, voted one of the prettiest villages in France, is only 10 km with its numerous cafes, bars and restaurants. Carcassonne, Lezignan and Narbonne are all within 20 -30 minutes and have great markets and many restaurants. In the warmer months there are stunning swimming holes within 10 minutes drive. The coast is 30 km away at Narbonne Plage and the northern Spanish beaches are 1.5 hours away. Barcelona is an easy 3 hours away.  The scenery in this area is spectacular.

How to get here

The house is 25 minutes from the train station at Carcssonne (serviced by the TGV) and the airport which is serviced by Easyjet from Stanstead in London. From Carcassonne head east on the A61/E80 autoroute and take exit 24.

Head for Trebes but just before take the D3 towards Lagrasse. After 15km turn left towards Montlaur. Just past the little bridge turn left into Rue des Couteaux. Coming from the east, Montpellier, Narbonne or Perpignan take the E16/E80 to just south of Narbonne, transfer to the A61. Take exit 25, head to Fabrezan, turn right onto the D212, follow that, turn right towards Camplong d'Aude. Follow the signs to Montlaur.
