Home description

A very warm welcome awaits you from the Spencer family, their labrador and tabby cat, to this very large, rural and luxury farmhouse in a peaceful location with magnificent views. This rural farmhouse is situated about 1 hour south of Toulouse or Carcassonne and only 8kms from the medieval town of Pamiers and 30 minutes from Mirepoix.   As well as rustic surroundings and location the farmhouse is fitted with all modern conveniences to make your stay a comfortable one that you will remember.

Adjacent to the farmhouse is a large swimming pool which our guests can relax by and take in the views of the surrounding fields and rolling hills.  Enjoy a quiet ice chilled drink on a sunlounger or at a table and completely relax.

This very large, 17th Ariegeoise farmhouse is set in 50 acres of arable land and forest, on a "reserve nationale" (an area of outstanding natural beauty) located in the rolling hills in its own valley, 5 minutes outside the town centre of Pamiers, 5kms from St Victor Rouzaud, nearby Escosse, and 20 minutes from Foix, St Martin D'Oydes and the hilltop town of Carla Bayle and 30 minutes from the famous pretty medieval town of Mirepoix.  The town of Pamiers has good local amenities, places of interest to see and bars, restaurants and 3 open air markets, plus a "flea" market each week and is very easily accessible from St Victor du Fau.  Pamiers has its own local fete at the end of August which is a large event.

An idyllic location for people seeking peace and quiet, except for birdsong and cow bells. Good local footpaths surround us, plus our beautiful woodland with little paths running though it adjacent to a pretty stream.

St Victor du Fau nestles in its own valley and enjoys sumptuous views over rolling hills and woodlands and is an ideal place to chill out and relax. There is an abundance of wildlife (deer, wild boar and hare), plus many wonderful birds golden oriel, large black, green and spotted woodpeckers and lovely wild flowers including many varieties of wild orchid in the months of May and June.

At St Victor du Fau there are 50 acres fields and beautiful woods. At the bottom of the woods is a stream and an abundance of wild flowers which grow along its banks. Throughout the fields in spring, there are wild orchids and other lovely flowers. As the farm is on a nature reserve there is no hunting allowed. There are many local national footpaths around us and St Victor Rouzaud, the nearest village approximately 3 miles away, is on the "Chemin de St Jacques de Compostelle" which is an ancient pilgrims route from Arles in France to Santiago in Spain.

Outside south facing terrace with table, chairs, parasol and barbecue. The swimming pool has outstanding views across the valley towards La Bidoun (an equestrian centre) where one can watch the horses slowly amble across the fields. There is a general feeling of total peace and quiet plus birdsong at St Victor du Fau.

The surrounding hills are ideal for ramblers, walkers, cyclists, bikers, photographers and people who enjoy watching bird and wildlife. There are many local "Grande Randonee" (public footpaths) in the vicinity of which we are happy to provide details.

Stunning views of the nearby hills and rolling countryside. Large fields for you to wander in with fantastic wild flowers, especially wild orchids in May and June. A number of  animals to see, roe deer, hares and fairly rarely, wild boar. The woods host a number of wild birds to see and hear, including large, lesser-spotted and green woodpeckers. For the butterfly watchers, we have a large amount of butterflies which surround the house during the warmer months.

For cyclists, the surrounding area is clearly suitable for cycling. Le Tour de France cycle race passed by the top of the drive during the race in 2006. The house is situated only 10 minutes from junction 3 on the A66 at Pamiers but is situated in an extremely peaceful area.

• Bedroom 1 - large double bedroom with king size French bed, wooden floors and high ceilings. Overhead fan. Door to private balcony with wonderful views to the front and side of farmhouse. En-suite bathroom with "rain forest shower head" walk-in shower and washbasin. 
• Separate WC.
• Bedroom 2 - large bedroom, 2 single beds (adult sized) with additional space for a zed-bed if required. Wooden floors and high ceilings, views to back and side of house, forest and fields. Overhead fan. En-suite shower room with shower, sink and WC. 
• Sitting room  - very large room with woodburner stove, two 3 seater sofas and two armchairs. Large mahogany Victorian table and chairs. Satellite, plasma TV, DVD, VCR and music system with iPod connection.
• Kitchen - large room with enormous French farmhouse table and chairs, with cosy corner with sofas, again with another TV for the cook or others to watch in the kitchen. Smeg range electric oven with 6 ringed gas hob, plus microwave, Le Creuset pots and pans, generous amount of crockery, cutlery, tableware and glassware.
• Downstairs WC.
• Utility room with washing machine and dishwasher, plus large armoire American fridge with ice maker and cold water from the mains. 

Outside

Outside terrace with large table & chairs plus use of owners extremely large swimming pool (12m x 6m), sun loungers & sun umbrellas. Various other benches situated so that our guests can enjoy the views of the surrounding countryside.

About the location

Set in a gentle valley amongst the rolling hills at the end of a half-mile drive, only 8kms from an important and medieval town, Pamiers it is an ideal holiday location for guests seeking peace and calm, in a rural location, yet only minutes from very good local amenities. The roads around the property were used as part of the major cycling race "Le Tour de France" in the summer of 2006. St Victor du Fau is situated in the middle of 50 acres of open farmland and about 12 acres of woods on a "Reserve Nationale" (national park). The area is a conservation area and has its own outstanding natural beauty.

Pamiers is large town with a number of bars, restaurants, supermarkets and shops and is an hour’s drive from either Carcassonne or Toulouse airport and only 10 minutes drive from the A66 Autoroute/N20 which then continues south to Andorra. (GPS co-ordinates Latitude 43.1214, Longitude 1.5733).

The other large towns nearby are Foix and Mirepoix plus other lovely villages of Carla Bayle, Maz D’Azil, St Martin D’Oydes, Le Fossat, Benagues, Madiere and Pailhes all of which are within 25 minutes drive. The Pyrenean ski resorts of Ax-Bonascre, Les Monts D’Olmes (downhill) and Plateau de Beille and Domaine du Chioula (cross-country and raquettes) are all possible to reach within an hour. The large walled fortress town of Carcassonne is an easy drive of about an hour.

The area is rich in stunning scenery and in Cathar history and is mentioned many local places feature in books such as The Labyrinth and The Albigensian Crusade.

• Pau and Perpignan: about 2 hours away
• Private plane flyers can take advantage of the local light aircraft airport at Les Pujols, a 15 minute drive.
• BA, Easyjet, Flybe, Air France and Jet2 all fly into Toulouse from the UK.
• Ryanair flies into Carcasonne, Perpignan and Pau.
• Driving from the Brittany coast takes abot 9 hours and from Calais about 10 hours by car.
• A car, motorbike or bicycle is preferable to reach the farm.
