Home description

Poulancre Holiday Homes is a small family run business that is situated in the heart or Brittany. We welcome well behaved pets as we appreciate that they are also an important family member. We have a rabbit two cats and a dog at present, that are well behaved and good with children of all ages.

The hamlet of Poulancre is quiet and tranquil ideal for a holiday away from the hustle and bustle of everday life. There is nothing better than to wake up to the sound of birdsong and to see nature on your doorstep with rabbits and foxes often visiting the gardens of Poulancre in the early morning / late evening. At the Lavoir (natural pond) you will find frogs and newts as well as a variety of butterflies and dragonflies. In the evening you can sit outside eating georgeous food and drinking wine relaxing as you watch the sun going down through the trees.

In the communal garden a childrens play area is slowly taking shape with swing, seesaw and trampoline.

We are ideally situated in the centre of Brittany and have a number of contacts if you wish to purchase your own little piece of France. If you are not sure about a permanent move to France, perhaps rent a cottage with a reduced rate for a long-let to see how you like the area before investing your hard earned money.

Nefflier Cottage is a very spacious 1 bedroom cottage, full of charm and character, yet fitted with modern conveniences. Originally the Stable for the farm at Poulancre d'en Bas, it now includes part of the Main Barn on the ground floor, providing a generous and fully equipped kitchen with gas cooker, microwave and washing machine, and a modern bathroom. The front of Nefflier Cottage faces the Courtyard and to the rear is a private and very sunny terrace with Barbecue and garden furniture. The terrace faces to the south and west, so provides the perfect location for outdoor eating, or perhaps for "sun-downers" drinks after a busy day out!

• The spacious yet cosy Lounge/Dining room retains the original open beams in the ceiling, and has a feature stone wall at one end with a wood-burning stove. Doors lead from both sides of the room; one to the Courtyard, the other to the private garden and terrace area. Beyond the garden is the parking area and sheltered communal grounds shared by our other two properties. Although primarily a holiday cottage for a couple or small family, we have provided ample crockery and other equipment to host visitors, and the dining table will comfortably seat six adults. The wood-burning stove, carefully placed lighting and good quality CD player combine to provide the perfect winter getaway for a romantic weekend, the likes of which are very hard to find in the off-season months in Brittany.
  
  The bedroom is 5m x 7m, providing ample room for a young family, as well as being a really luxurious hideaway for a couple. The Bedroom has a double bed and a single bed, and plenty of room for an additional cot or foldaway bed if required. Please note that the stairs to the Bedroom are quite steep, and may not be suitable for some people.
• The open beamed Kitchen is very spacious and overlooks the rear garden and terrace. With modern fittings, washing machine, microwave, filter coffee machine, fridge and freezer, the kitchen is well equipped for the creation of gourmet meals, but equally well suited to summer barbecues and salads! A half-glazed door leads from the kitchen directly onto the terrace, making it easy for the "chef" to use the BBQ provided!
• The Bathroom has a large tiled shower cubicle with a powerful shower unit, built in hand basin and vanity unit and a WC. There is also an electric razor point in the Bathroom.

Like all of our properties, Nefflier Cottage is equipped with traditional furniture and modern appliances, in order to retain its character whilst providing you with a comfortable and luxurious holiday home.

About the location

This part of Brittany is dotted with areas of historical interest, including many reminders of previous inhabitants and invaders, such as menhirs, megaliths, tumulii and carved stones.  Largely unspoilt by commercial development, the area also has many fine original  examples of chateaux, watermills and houses of architectural interest, including a nearby preserved foundry village at Les Forges des Salles which can be reached by car, or by a scenic walk through the historic Forêt de Quénécan. The tranquillity of a walk to seek out the standing stones or visit an historical monument, is perhaps the perfect way to enjoy the Breton countryside at any time of the year. This is particularly the case in the Autumn when the variety of colours and often clear skies are most photogenic.

Ornithologists can delight in the variety of species found in this area, with the Lac de Guerledan providing a winter shelter for numerous breeds of both sea and inland birds. Around the rivers, lakes and etangs of this region herons, egrets, kingfishers and other water birds are a common sight as they swoop to poach from the well stocked waterways, as are the birds of prey throughout the region.

For shopping and bargain hunting, our hamlet is ten minutes walk away from the village of St Mayeux, where there is a Post Office, small supermarket and friendly village shop. As well as our local town of Mur de Bretagne, we are only 15 minutes away from the larger towns of Pontivy, Loudeac and Rostrenen, and about an hour away from the towns of the south coast, including Vannes, Carnac and Quiberon. The city of St Brieuc, 35 minutes to the north, has excellent shopping facilities including one of the largest hypermarkets in Brittany and a bustling cobbled shopping area. 

Local street markets are well organised, most being either once or twice weekly but staggered throughout the week. These offer excellent value for locally produced vegetables, cheeses, bread, wine and honey (most of which tempt visitors with free tasters!), and often include stalls selling local craft items. In the summer months Mur de Bretagne also has an excellent evening market every Friday, with local entertainment and usually a gastronomic theme (again with free tasting!). The area is also dotted liberally with antique shops and "Depot Vente" where treasures may often be found at exceedingly good prices, particularly for pottery, bric a brac and oak furniture. The many "Vide Grenier" (literally translates as "Attic Emptying") sales are also a rich source of cheap local treasures and great fun to visit if you wish to try and haggle with the locals.

How to get here

Poulancre Holiday Homes is situated 10min North of Mur de Bretagne on the 22 / 56 border just off the D767.

We are 90 minutes from St Malo and Roscoff ports (Condor, Brittany  and HD Ferries) and our nearest airports are Dinard (45min), Rennes and Brest (90min).
