Four Gites with Large Heated Swimming Pool As featured in 'The Mail on Sunday'

Le Grand Vignaud is located amidst the beautiful countryside of the Charente/Dordogne border – one of the sunniest regions in France.

After a succesful opening season in 2008, we were featured in the Mail on Sunday (21/9/2008):-.

'Mark and Dawn have created a special place where the integrity of their gites blends perfectly with the serenity of the surrounding area' - Adrian Baker.

2009, 2010 and 2011 have seen a steady increase in visitors of all types - families wishing to enjoy the beautiful surroundings, places to visit and companionship of others (especially the kids!), artists, cyclists, walkers and those who simply want to relax by the pool with a good book.

There are four spacious gites, sleeping 4, 4, 6 and 8.  Each gite has been recently renovated to a high standard with all mod cons, while maintaining traditional features such as exposed beams and charentaise stone walls.  Each gite has a  private patio/terrace, with barbecue facilities and the shared use of a south-facing 11 x 5m swimming pool.   Free wifi is available.

Situated in a peaceful hamlet with panoramic views over the surrounding fields and woodland, Le Grand Vignaud offers the perfect location for those seeking rest and relaxation. Our local town, Montmoreau, is a 5 minute drive, offering local facilities such as supermarket, bank, pharmacy, bars and restaurants, whilst numerous sporting activities can be enjoyed in the surrounding area.

The property lies between Villebois-Lavalette (with 17thC hilltop chateau and historic covered market place) and Aubterre-sur-Dronne (offering riverside beach and 5th-12thC monolithic church). Also a prime location for visiting Angouleme, Cognac and Bordeaux, or for house-hunting throughout South Western France.

Onsite facilities include an external childrens play area with swings/sandpit. Badminton equipment and boules terrain are also provided. There is also a covered play area which includes a full size ping pong table, large amounts of wooden and plastic Thomas trains/track, dressing up clothes and lots of smallscale play toys.

The floodlit heated pool is fully enclosed, with a lockable gate for child safety. It is 1.5m deep, with a small paddling section for the use of small children (under adult supervision). There are toilet and showering facilities beside the pool.

A specialized filtering system provides clean, refreshing drinking water for all gites.

A large library of DVD films, board games and books can be borrowed by guests, as well as tennis equipment for the local free courts. A selection of bicycles are also available, at no cost, for exploring the surrounding countryside (safety helmets not provided).

A welcome pack is provided, including bread, wine, pasta and homemade bolognaise sauce to ensure a simple first night meal.

All gites are fitted with stair gates for child safety and are fully adapted for the visually impaired.

English and French speaking owners on site, with a daily free supply of fresh vegetables!.

Aubterre-sur-Dronne (15 mins) – Officially  classed as one of France’s  most picturesque villages, with unique monolithic church carved out of the rock beneath the castle and scenic riverside beach with pontoon and diving boards. There are canoes for hire here and nearby riding stables. There are many bars and restaurants, with traditional music playing in the main square during summer evenings.

Bordeaux (80 mins) – World famous for wine and architecture.  Visit medieval churches, cathedrals and museums or enjoy shopping in town centre boutiques.  Seasonal activities include the wine festival and river festival.

Guest Reviews Of Le Verdier

Frances de Heer

We’ve had a very good holiday, the area is lovely, lots to do, and the gite and pool have been difficult to drag the children away from.  We have stayed in many gites but this is the one where the hosts - Dawn & Mark – have gone the extra mile to make sure their guests are comfortable and enjoying themselves.  I am sure if Dawn could arrange the weather she would!  We have really enjoyed regular supplies of fresh veg and eggs and the children were delighted to buy some football shirts (ask Mark!).  This last week there have been evening football  matches between parents and children and Mark has shown why he is the local team coach!  Goodbye & thank you to Dawn, Mark, Lana, Gair & Louie – we’ll keep in touch.

We wished we could stay for longer!  Comfortable gite in a magnificent setting.  The boys swam in the pool every day because it always looks so inviting.  Good cycling territory and peaceful villages to visit.  Had a fantastic day out at futuroscope – 2 hrs away but a wonderful day for the family.  Thanks to Mark and Dawn for their kind hospitality and for the meal on arrival, the courgettes and the curry.  We will certainly recommend your resort to our friends at home!

Our welcome meal was much appreciated, as was the various garden produce. We loved the wonderful views and watching the sunsets from the patio. We have been walking along the GR4 & 36-60 miles – and enjoyed every minute in this wonderful countryside.

Weather very good and gite fantastic – we received a very warm welcome from our hosts.  The highlight of the holiday for me was visiting Oradour sur Glane.  The story of the village was well told in the museum.  If you are a keen photographer then the village is a must! (dad).  Lovely place and relaxed for 2 weeks.  Enjoyed the curry and the welcome pack was a brilliant touch!  Aubeterre is a must for the ladies.  Kids enjoyed the canoes at Aubeterre and the market was great in Chalais (mum).  Horse-riding was good and spent most of my time in the playroom and the swimming pool. The peace and tranquillity of this lovely villa gave us a relaxing and special holiday.  The playroom was a haven for the young and old.  Many hours spent battling on the pingpong table, whilst donkeys and princesses totted around.  The rivers around provided a magnificent days canoeing and pleasant beaches.  Thank you for a wonderful stay.

Many thanks to you both.  We had a really nice time relaxing around the gite and visiting the surrounding area.  From the moment we arrived you couldn’t have been more helpful, Mark with his advice on where to visit and Dawn with her wonderful curry recipe!!  Mark’s culinary skills were pretty good too!  Holly would like to say thanks also for the box of toys you provided which helped keep her busy!  We had a lovely 2 weeks and wouldn’t hesitate in recommending this holiday to anyone.  Thanks again.

Beautiful property, Dawn and Mark were so helpful and friendly and quickly made us feel at home. Other guests were great too. The cottage was clean, spacious and charming and the pool area and views were stunning and totally relaxing. Lots to do in the surrounding area for adults and kids We had a lovely stay and hope to go back again soon. Thanks for a good time!

We’ve had such a fantastic time here.  Mark & Dawns’ hospitality has been second to none:  Mark’s fresh veggies have been a particular added bonus!  The kids (and us) have really enjoyed the pool, the play area, the football matches and we feel inspired to go back home & play lots of ping-pong & ride our bikes more!  We’ve visited Aubeterre, Chalais market & Perigeux.  We thought the market was great and the ‘Jardin des Arenes’ in Perigeux is great if you have small children – it allowed us adults to take it in turns to look around the town which is beautiful and interesting.
