This sunny, spacious, comfortable house set in 3/4 acre of private gardens bordered by a stream and wood is situated near the pretty village of Saint Pardoux in the midst of the well preserved Gatine countryside, famed for its rolling hills and valleys, extensive orchards, streams and lakes.

This is a lovely part of France, being one of the most peaceful, unspoilt areas, full of character, history and tranquillity. There are lots of places to see and plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants to enjoy local cuisine. This area enjoys a much better climate than the UK, with longer, warmer summers and a lot less rain. It is particularly popular with house hunters, properties remaining very reasonably priced with lots of choice. With no owner and no other lets on site you can enjoy this sunny property in peace.

About the location

The property is about 1 minute's drive from the village of Saint Pardoux, which has a local baker, grocer's, hairdresser and bar restaurant. At Saint Lin is a superb, typically french restaurant, the Napoleon. At Verruyes is a magnificent leisure lake with beach area, swings etc, fishing and a restaurant and cafe. At Secondigny is another superb leisure lake, with pedaloes, fishing, a larger than olympic swimming pool, tennis courts, boules ground, crazy golf and a very good restaurant overlooking the lake. 

At Mazieres-en-Gatine, about 10 minutes drive away, is a popular golf course in the grounds of a chateau, le Petit Chene, for keen golfers.

Parthenay, about 10 minutes drive away, is a bustling market town with great atmosphere and offers lots of restaurants, bars, music, cinema, shops, swimming pool, sports facilities, a museum and fine architecture dating from the middle ages, with parts of the city walls and chateau still intact.

South of the property at Echire is the chateau of Coudray-Salbart, famous for its medieval architecture, and built in the 12th and 13th centuries when the area was supported by the plantagenets following the marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine to Henry II. 

There are lots of beautiful little villages to explore, such as Xaintray and Beaulieu-sous-Parthenay with its beautiful partially moated chateau with reconstructed medieval garden.

There are extensive walks in the area and it is ideal for cycling, with a mixture of hills, valleys and lots of picturesque villages to enjoy en route. The roads are relatively peaceful, this being one of the most unspoilt areas of France.

At Clave is a beautiful lake with a dam, and a fabulous 18km circuit for ramblers.

How to get here

The property is close to Saint Pardoux, a pretty little village 10 minutes south-west of Parthenay. It is about 45 mins from La Rochelle airport, about 30 minutes from Poitiers airport, about 1 1/4 hrs from Angers airport and about 1 hr 25 mins from Nantes and Tours airport.  St Malo is approx 3 1/2 hrs drive, Cherbourg and Caen about 4hrs 40 mins drive. The nearest mainline stations are Niort and Poitiers.
