Le Petit Bouchon offers two self contained  gites for adults only. They can also be rented for B&B. These open on 1st August 2008 and are completely new. The gites are  Le Blaye and Le Bordeaux  named after two of the local wine producing areas, the gites being situated in the heart of the Cotes de Blay region.

Both have a spacious living area with wood burning fires, dining area and fully fitted kitchen with fridge freezer, oven, hob, microwave and washing machine/dryer. Patio doors lead to a private garden area with garden furniture and barbecue. Upstairs is the bathroom with power shower, toilet and two double bedrooms.  A weekly maid service is included in the cost and a daily maid service is available at an extra fifteen euros per day. Meals can be cooked for you, prices available on request. We have a barbecue for all on Saturday evenings during peak season and a farewell buffet on Friday evening.

There is a private bar where the local wine can be tasted along with cocktails, aperitifs and digestives.

Le Petit Bouchon is located on the outskirts of the village of St. Ciers sur Gironde the centre of which is just over half a mile away. In St. Ciers you have bakeries, butchers, newsagents and a Super U supermarket which is open seven days a week and has a petrol station. There are other independent shops too. The local cave offers an excellent selection of wines, pineau and cognac but there are vineyards in quantity for the serious wine taster. The beautiful church of St. Ciers is well worth a visit and has recently been lovingly decorated. For the energetic there are tennis courts in the village, excellent cycling routes, walking routes and, of course, fishing. The port of Callonges, where the "Cockleshell Heroes" first landed is just a few miles away and has a superb seafood restaurant overlooking the estuary.

The town of Blaye, with its magnificent citadel is just fifteen minutes away and there is wonderful sea fishing there. Beaches are not far away and we are equidistant between the beautiful town of Saintes in the Charente Maritime and Bordeaux to the south. Both offer shopping, culture and gastronomy.

Best of all is the weather. This area is the second sunniest in France, losing our only to the Cote d'Azure. Even in mid winter you can take your tea outside and not feel cold. It is a perfect place to visit at any time of the year.

• Surrounded by fields we have a swimming pool and hot tub which seats eight people and can be booked for private use. There will never be more than ten people sharing the poll/hot tub at any time. 
• There is also a private bar for residents only which can provide local wine, aperitifs and digestives or a choice of cocktails provided by experienced bar staff.
• Outside of the gites the area is mainly covered by vines.

Accommodation detail

Entry to the living area which has a large sofa, which converts to a bed to accomodate a third person, armchair and television. To the right is a fully equipped kitchen and dining area. Patio doors lead to the private garden which has sun-loungers, chairs and barbecue.

Upstairs are two double bedrooms with king size beds and the bathroom with power shower and toilet.

About the location

Situated just outside the little town of St. Ciers sur Gironde, Le Petit Bouchon is a haven of peace surrounded by the rolling vineyards of the Cotes de Blaye region.

The marais (wet-lands) is just over a mile to the west and provides excellent bird watching as well as being the main oyster producing region. Seafood is a major food in this area and, coupled with the excellent wine produced locally provides a gastronomic delight. Go out and purchase your favourite seafood locally and bring it back for us to prepare for you to eat either in or, ideally, outside of your gite, watching the stars.

For the wine lover it offers the possibility to visit many of the chateaux, sampling not only the wine but the Pineau and Cognac. If wine is not a major interest there are opportunities for walking and cycling. The towns of Bordeaux and Saintes are each 59 kilometers distant and off many varied cultural, gastronomic and shopping opportunities. There is sea and fresh water fishing and the beaches towards Royan, just under and hour's drive away are beautiful and never overcrowded.

St. Ciers itself has all of the necessary facilities, bank and post office, boulangeries, butchers, newsagents (selling English newspapers), hairdressers and for the French speakers a cinema. There are also several small independent shops and a large Super U supermarket open seven days a week. The town is dominated by a beautiful church which holds a mass every Sunday.

How to get here

Road A10 to junction 38. After peage turn left then right signposted St. Ciers sur Gironde, 6 kilometers. At church turn left and follow road through to end of village sign. After that turn right. Le Petit Bouchon is approx 700 metres on the right hand side.
