About the location

During the Middle Ages Azille was only behind Narbonne and Carcassonne in terms of local importance. Many vestiges of this period remain adding a strong historical dimension to its tranquil atmosphere. One of the two monasteries established in the 14th century, Clarisse is still active, remains of the second, Cordelier, are still visible from the main promenade. This was where the Black Prince stayed during his marauding in Languedoc in the hundred years war. Much of the “City’s” medieval wall is also still in evidence.

Tranquillity is occasionally suspended. In early May the annual Bull-Run takes over the village for 4 days. In June it’s the music festival and in August the annual fete.

Azille is also the centre of the Minervois wine producing region with many free wine tasting opportunities. Don’t confine yourself to the fabulous reds, try the whites especially the viognier and the sparkling. They complement the local oysters perfectly.
