About the location

Les Rives is situated in the village of La Cour Barrée, alongside the Canal du Nivernais, about 10 minutes drive south from Auxerre.

Surrounded by vineyards and the beautiful River Yonne, this is a popular tourist destination for wine lovers and boaters alike. The Canal du Nivernais is right outside the house and cruisers and the occasional hotel barge make for lively canal activity during the season. The chemin de haulage (tow path) is a great place to walk, cycle or roller blade - used by the locals and visitors alike, this area of great beauty offers a calm yet hospitable environment in which to enjoy the Burgundian countryside.

The medieval town of Auxerre, with its lively port, St Etienne's Cathedral, St Germains's Abbey and historic pebble stoned streets, is a beautiful and fascinating place to visit. There are plenty of shops, 2 food markets a week and a good choice of restaurants and café-bars. All major supermarkets can be found on the outskirts of town. The sports facilities are excellent, with a modern swimming pool complex (indoor and outdoor), a football stadium and tennis courts, and the Town Park and botanical gardens alongside the river.

The Chablis appellation controllée vineyards and producer villages are a must for wine lovers. Wine tastings are offered and winemakers often show their pinot noir and sauvignon blanc wines from the wider Auxerrois region as well. Nearby there is also the local Crémant de Bourgogne producer, Les Caves de Bailly, just a few km from the house. The cellars are literally inside the cliff face that overlooks the river Yonne - an excellent way to enjoy a glass of bubbles and cool off on hot summer days.  

Half an hour's drive away, at the gateway to the Morvan, is the Unesco site of Vezelay. Perched high up on the hillside, overlooking the river Cure, pilgrims have visited Vezelay's Basilica of Sainte Madeleine for centuries and it is said that the relics of Mary Magdalene lie here. It was in Vezelay that Thomas a Becket excommunicated Henri II.

How to get here

By car: From Calais by car it takes about 5 hours via Reims and Troyes. If driving from Paris, the house is about 2 hours drive south of Paris on the A6 and then the N6.

By plane: Airports CDG Roissy and Orly are about 2 and a half hours drive away. Lyon airport is about 3 hours drive.

By train: There is a train service to Auxerre from the Gare de Lyon and the Gare de Bercy in Paris.
