Tucked between the Dordogne River and steep, dramatic stone cliffs, the village of La Roque Gageac is the picturesque location for this completely renovated 4 bedroom stone house.

The convenient floor plan of the house allows for families or friends traveling together to enjoy the large open main floor for meals, conversation and relaxing. Yet have complete privacy with the main floor separating their sleeping quarters.

La Roque Gageac is completely sheltered by the cliffs, there is an area where the semi-tropical plant life survives year-round. A walking path that runs behind the buildings at the foot of the cliff provides great views. There are also pre-historic Troglodyte dwellings above. 

Cross the street to the Dordogne River to swim and canoe. Walk to free tennis courts and boules. Gourmet dining steps from the house as well as great pizza for the kids.

The layout of the property is as follows:

• On the mid-level of this three-story house, one enters through a rustic wooden door set into the thick, ochre-colored stonewalls onto a private courtyard. This leads to the entrance of the the home through your completely remodeled kitchen with massive stone fireplace ("cantou") that now houses a wood stove, a long dining table, a new cooking range, and an American style refrigerator. The kitchen is completely equipped for convenient meal preparation.
• Also on this floor, is a separate toilet room with sink.
• The attractive lounge has oak beams and the original large traditional fireplace (in addition there is electric heating for winter use). The lounge is spacious with comfortable seating for gathering and sharing the days events. There are double French doors leading out to the ivy covered river view terrace. Also for your comfort: There is a convenient DSL connection, a Bose Ipod port, radio, tv, and free international calls to both the UK and USA.
• An open wooden, spiral staircase leads to the top floor where there is a master bedroom with a double bed. A second bedroom next-door has two twin beds. Both bedrooms share a shower room with toilet and sink. A landing separates these two rooms.
• Below the main floor, on the lowest level, there is another double bedroom and spacious bathroom with tub/shower, bidet, toilet and sink. The second bedroom on this floor has twin beds and a sitting area.

About the location

Sheltered beneath steep cliffs, La Roque Gageac, is deservedly designated one of "les Plus Beax Village de France". In medieval times, it was an important fortified village and later saw the addition of renaissance manors, including the Manoir de Tarde. It has retained its authentic character over the centuries, featuring attractive narrow stone streets, and interesting homes, churches, and public buildings. There is a weekly market, fabulous restaurants, a pizzeria, and a bakery/pastry shop.

For recreation, there are tennis courts, river beaches, and canoes for rent. Completely sheltered by the cliffs, there is an area where the semi-tropical plant life survives year-round. A walking path that runs behind the buildings at the foot of the cliff provides great views. There are also pre-historic Troglodyte dwellings above.

We are close to Castlenaud, Beynac, Sarlat and Domme.

How to get here

La Roque Gagaec is in the south-west of France, about 150 km north of Toulouse, and the same distance east of Bordeaux - on the map, just follow the Dordogne river east from Bordeaux. You can get to us by air, by train, or by car. 

By Air - There are connecting flights from Paris to Toulouse and to Bordeaux, but the drive from Toulouse is faster and easier. The drive from Toulouse will take about 2-2½ hours, while from Bordeaux it is 3½-4 hours, depending on the traffic. Other nearby airports are Bergerac (Ryan air from Stansted) and Brive la Guardia both within one hours drive of the house.

By Train - If you are spending some time in Paris before coming here (or even if you aren't), consider the train. There is a very good service from Gare d'Austerlitz to Brive, 50 minutes away and Souillac, 20 minutes away. Most car rental agencies have offices in Brive. This is usually much easier than taking the TGV (Train à Grand Vitesse) to Bordeaux.

By Car - Consider picking up your car at Orly airport, south of Paris - you can take the airport bus from CDG, and let them worry about Paris traffic. The drive from Paris takes about 5 hours, most of it on fast and attractive autoroutes - A10 through Orléans, and then A20 to Souillac, south of Limoges. We find the Michelin yellow series of maps indispensable - No. 329, Correze Dordogne is the best choice.

Car Rental/Leasing - It is often cheaper to lease a car from the manufacturer than to rent, especially if you are coming for more than two weeks, and this can be arranged through your travel agent. If you are coming in the summer, be sure to ask for an air-conditioned car. Note that most car rental agencies are closed on Sundays and holidays.
