Accommodation detail

The Keep at le Château de Saint-Loup has been newly renovated to provide chamber d'hôte (bed and breakfast) accommodations in medieval style complete with antique furnishings and many rooms with four-poster beds. The medieval period was dominated by the de Dercé family, originally from the Loudun area, one of whose members was responsible for the construction of a fortress. The Keep is all that remains of this, comprising the fourteenth-century square tower on the right and the adjoining fifteenth-century buildings on the left, which were later remodeled in the nineteenth century in the troubadour style. The Black Prince imprisoned the French king, Jean le Bon, in the Keep after the battle of Poitiers in 1356. You will see the ring of machicolations that crowns the square tower, and the high wooden cross pieces which supported the hoardings. The entrance to the tower was protected by a portcullis.

When you rent the Keep of le Château de Saint-Loup in its entirety, you will have complete use of the fully equipped kitchen, the grand dining room and the salon.

How to get here

By car: From Paris a 3,5-hour drive via the Autoroute (A10) direction Tours. Take the N152 at Tours direction Saumur, the N147 at Saumur to Montreuil-Bellay, the D938 direction Thouars and proceed 23 kilometers to left turn onto the D46 direction Saint-Loup-Lamairé. The château is signposted.

From Poitiers: take the N149 direction Parthenay, then the D938 direction Thouars, and turn right onto the D46 direction Saint-Loup-Lamairé.

Airport: domestic flights into Poitiers

Train: from Paris, Gare Montparnasse, to Poitiers the TGV takes about one and a half hours. The TGV from Charles de Gaulle Airport to Poitiers - 2 hours.
