16th Century Large Stone Manor House with private pool set amongst the rolling vineyards in the Dropt Valley. Ideal large family or group holiday. The 14 x 6 metre private pool has a solar cover that keeps it at a comfortable temperature. The cover is removed in the summertime and the pool is protected with a child-safe alarm. The pool is elevated and overlooks the garden's cherry, apple, and citrus trees, with views of surrounding farm and vineyards. There are four terraces in total. The Pool terrace has an elevated area with table, chairs and sun-loungers. The largest terrace is situated at the back of the house with one area undercover and a table which seats  around 20. Front gardens overlook Monsegur, our nearest main village.

The property is in the Dropt valley and is a short walk from the river Dropt (which was apparently voted the cleanest river in France - great for fishing).

The area is also situated between two of the largest rivers in France the Dordogne and the river Garonne.

There is spacious living accommodation on the ground floor with log fires in the library, living room and drawing room. Although the house sleeps 16, one bedroom has 4 double beds making it an ideal family room.

About the location

The region the house is in is called the Entre Deux Mers - this area has a micro climate giving a more favourable temperature all year round. 

Monsegur in the centre of Aquitaine, is the perfect base for exploring South West France.  With quiet winding roads meandering through the beautiful countryside, you have a great base to visit all of the historic sights of the Gironde, Dordogne and Lot et Garonne. The Bordeaux wine region is the largest in the world. Surrounding Monsegur you can visit many local vinyards and do wine tasting in the inidividual chateaus. Not far from Monsegur are the famous wine producers St. Emilion and Pomerol to mention a few.

Nearby towns

Not far away are the towns of Duras, Marmande, Ste Foy la Grande, Bergerac and Eymet all within 25 minutes drive. Each have great weekly markets selling local produce. These towns also offer a larger range of shops, including Supermarkets, Restaurants, Bars, Banks and Estate Agents. St. Emilion is well worth exploring it is beautiful and famous for its Vinyards.  During  the summer months an open sided tourist tram takes you on a short interesting tour of the ancient cobbled streets and nearby vineyards. This is a wonderful place to go for lunch.

Bordeaux

The city of Bordeaux offers an interesting day out for shopping or sight seeing. This could be combined with a trip to the coast, which is about 1hour by car from Bordeaux.  There are many protected natural areas by the sea and an ornithological park at Bassin d'Arcachon. You can also explore Europe's highest sand dune at Pilat and visit the many resorts of the Atlantic coast with their fine beaches and excellent sea food restaurants.

The area has beautiful landscapes, a rich culture and culinary treats. The region is famous for wines but also produces excellent prunes to make 'Pruneaux d'Agen'. The village of Dieulivol has a history dating back to the crusades - pilgrims set off from its church in search of the Holy Grail, crying "Dieu le veul" (God wills it) as they departed.  Dieulivol has a small post office that stocks basic provisions.

The peaceful beauty of this countryside has attracted people from around the world who seek a more simple, tranquil life. The celebrated Buddhist monk and best-selling author Thich Nhat Hanh chose the village of Dieulivol for his international retreat center, Plum Village.

Nearby is the pretty town of Duras, perched high up above the river Dropt valley. Here are local shops, bars and restaurants as well as the Chateau of the Ducs de Duras, now a museum. The chateau hosts concerts and events including a wine fair in late July or August, featuring the local appellation - les Cotes de Duras.  Duras has a lively open air market Monday mornings where locals sell fresh produce, fish, meats, baguettes and pastries, to household goods and flowers.

A splendid golf course and spa are at Chateau des Vigiers, 20 mins away and a great place for lunch al fresco!

From around the world, fly to Paris or London and then transfer to Bordeaux.

From the UK you can fly to either Bordeaux (1 hour away) or Bergerac (30 minutes) using the following airlines:

By car from the UK we suggest using either Speed Ferries from Dover to Boulogne sur Mer, Eurotunnel or Brittanyferries from Portsmouth to Caen. For a relaxed journey through France to Monsegur, use the autoroutes.

By train, use the TGV from Paris to either Bordeaux or Libourne and collect a hire car (see above).
