Home description

The property, Le Chalet, occupies a commanding position on the edge of the quiet hamlet of Lescale at 640m above sea level with stunning views of the valley and mountains. The property is set in its own garden with barbecue and further grassland in the fields immediately opposite. The aspect provides sun from early morning to evening.

The village of Puivert is just 5km down the hill with its picturesque lake for safe bathing, bar, general stores and boulangerie, historc chateau and close to a wide range of outdoor pursuits.

The property is on the edge of the picturesque historic hamlet of Lescale which was desecrated in World War 2 as a reprisal for the effectiveness of the local resistance. However, it was completely and tastefully restored by local farmers after the war and today retains all of its original rural charm.

Surrounded by mountain woodlands, there are numerous walks for all levels of ability with breathtaking views and unique flora and fauna.

It is also fairly close to the famous ski resorts of Camurac and Ax le Thermes and many white water gorges and grand scenery and an opportunity to explore the legendary Cathar region including the ancient walled city of Carcassonne.

In 2008 the Tour de France passes through Puivert and there are mountian stages nearby most years.

• Bedroom 5 - is adjacent to bedroom 4 and is a small children’s room with bunk bed. There is an additional single folding bed available.

About the location

Situated at the edge of the quiet hamlet of L'Escale the Chalet is 630m up in the foothills of the French Pyrenees, Le Chalet, is a wonderful base for your exploration of the legendary ancient Cathar Castles, forests and spectacular mountain gorges.

For birdwatchers and nature lovers it is where the eagles and vultures fly. There are many types of raptor that can be both seen and heard even from the Chalet. Close to the small town of Puivert there is a general store, restaurant, bar, boulangerie and museum. Just 2.7 miles from the property is a lake (see picture) with sandy beach and free safe bathing with life guard for children and adults alike. There is also a picnic area and cafe. Skiiing is only a short drive away.

The region boasts over 200 days of sunshine per year, usually with warm weather from April to October

• Gatwick/Birmingham/Bristol to Toulouse - Easyjet or Flybe. Approx. 1 1/2 hours to Chalet
• Stansted to Perpignan - Ryanair. Approx. 1 1/2 hours to Chalet
• From all of these airports car hire can be arranged when booking with Flybe/Easyjet or Ryanair

By Car: The Chalet is in L'Escale close to Puivert which is on the D117 south of Carcassonne.

By Rail: Links between Quillan and Carcassonne.
