Home description

Situated in the heart of Lower Normandy and nestling in the Dives Valley between Orne and Calvados sits Le Pont d'Ommoy, a late 18th century Caen stone farmhouse set within 4 acres of garden and pasture land bordering a tributary of the river Dives. The setting of the house is idyllic - peaceful whilst at the same time providing the perfect base to explore the region.

The geothermal heated swimming pool remains at a constant 26 degrees during the summer months.

The owners Stuart Atkinson & Kiel Shaw have extensively restored and reformed the farmhouse in 2007 to offer a contemporary and luxurious living space inside and out, furnished with French country antiques.

On the upper two floors of the house comprise a total of five comfortable bedrooms, three of which have en-suite bath and shower rooms plus a further separate well appointed bathroom with shower.

On the ground floor, the space is open and light with all reception areas benefiting from WI-FI Internet and switchable speakers from a central CD music console which is also iPOD or laptop compatible.  Accommodation consists of a reception hall, vast comfortable sitting room with three sets of French doors, a state-of-the-art bespoke kitchen, WC, utility room and large dining room with five fold back French doors leading straight out onto a high walled and fenced expansive area of decking with geothermal heated swimming pool (10 metres by 5 metres) together with a unique barbecue area, all South-West facing.  There is also an outside adjoining annex providing a separate shower room, WC and outside kitchen. There are eight sun loungers available for relaxation next to the pool together with tables and twelve chairs for outside eating.

Within the delightful pea-shingled walled courtyard to the front of the house are formal flower beds and a seating area which is itself dominated by a late 17th century barn giving total privacy.  Our pet donkeys reside in the field adjacent.  To the side of the house is a large grassed area and seating next to the river.

There is also an outdoor games salon offering pool, table tennis, darts and boules.

About the location

Le Pont d'Ommoy (pronounced Ommoir) is a tiny hamlet just outside of the village of Fontaine les Bassets and close to the small town of Trun with it's weekly farmer's market, shops, bars and amenities.

The house, set in the Dives Valley - also known as the Falaise Gap - is where the final ferocious Battle of Normandy took place in 1944. There are many local memorial sites and monuments dedicated to the allied forces following the liberation of Normandy.

The historic market town of Falaise, birthplace of William the Conqueror, with it's chateau, charming bars and excellent restaurants is fifteen minutes drive further north. Falaise is the gateway to the rugged Suisse Normande which offers many outdoor pursuits during the summer months.

The town of St Pierre sur Dives is twenty minutes drive further east, with it's renowned and diverse weekly farmer's market held every Monday and it's monthly antique fair held on the first Sunday of every month in the medieval hall

The cathedral city of Caen - capital of Calvados - is a 35 minute drive north-east, with it's many hyper-markets, bars, restaurants, and marina.

Heading further south into the Orne, the picturesque town of Argentan offers ample supermarkets and shops and is a twenty minute drive. Le Haras du Pin, France's national horse stud is a 25 minute drive and is open to the public daily with a spectacular horse and rider display every Thursday afternoon during the summer.

Slightly further afield and within one hour's drive are the famous Normandy D-Day landing beaches. To the east of these are Bayeux with it's cathedral and famous tapestry and the sophisticated coastal towns of Deauville & Trouville and the picturesque port of Honfleur - all with their designer boutiques, galleries and seafood restaurants.

Paris can be reached within 3 hours by car and Mont St Michel is approximately 2.5 hours.

How to get here

Ferries:  Car use is essential and the ferry ports of Ouistreham near Caen (50 minutes) and Le Havre (1 hour 30 minutes) give Le Pont d'Ommoy perfect access from the UK by car.  Other options for channel crossings include the port of Calais and Eurotunnel (4 hours) and the port of Dieppe (2 hours).

 Airports:  Paris Orly and Paris Charles De Gaulle airports (3 hours 30 minutes) , Paris Beauvais airport (3 hours), Tours airport (Loire) and Dinard airport (Brittany) (both 2 hours 30 minutes).  Deauville airport (1 hour) and Caen Carpiquet airport (40 minutes). 

Trains:  Argentan SNCF (25 minutes) from Gare Montparnasse Paris, Caen SNCF (35 minutes) from Gare St Lazarre Paris.
