A delightful, completely modernised, traditional cottage offering a relaxed holiday for couples in the heart of the Charantaise countryside.

The hamlet is surrounded by vineyards and sunflowers, but with the restaurants, cafes and bars of the sophisticated and historic town of St Jean d'Angely only ten minutes away.

Enjoy the peace and quiet of our tiny hamlet; set up the barbeque in your private courtyard or somewhere on our 2,000sq m of grassy land; stroll through our developing vegetable 'potager'; put up the badminton net; perfect your 'boule' technique, or pop into St Jean d'Angely for a glass of wine or a meal. Or perhaps you'd just like to catch the last of the evening sunshine on the sunloungers...

Accommodation detail

La Petite Gravelle is a delightful Charantaise cottage some 300 years old, which was tastefully modernised and completely refitted with a new kitchen, furniture, shower room and equipment in 2009.

Exposed stone walls and a large traditional stone fireplace are the focal points of the living area, while heavy roof beams dominate the bedroom. Please note that due to the traditional shape of the building there is limited headroom over part of the bedroom.

Outside

A sunny, south-west facing courtyard looks out across a 2,000sq m grassy area shared with the owners - who live next door but completely separate and private from the cottage. There is a 50m riverbank with the river Nie for most of the year, although it often dries in the height of the summer. The owners' chickens and ducks may be encountered - fresh eggs are available!

Ample parking - undercover in the barn for motorcycles.

About the location

Extremely peaceful, rural location on western edge of small hamlet overlooking open countryside, yet only 10 minutes from the historic town of St Jean d'Angely with its Abbaye, twice weekly market, restaurants, cafes and bars. Less than thirty minutes from the impressive Roman remains in Saintes. Cognac with its distillery tours and the imposing old hill-top town of Angouleme are only a little further.

The seemingly endless sandy beaches of the Cote Sauvage are easily accessible as are the beautiful harbourside area of La Rochelle and the fascinating naval history at Rochefort.

How to get here

Very easily accessible from the A10 toll autoroute or the N150 'Route National'. We provide an illustrated guide for the last few kilometers of rural 'chemins'.

Allow 6 to 7 hours from the mid-channel ports (Cherbourg, Le Havre).

La Rochelle and Angouleme airports are convenient and hire cars are available. Nearest TGV service is to Angouleme or Poitiers.
