Classical Napoleon 1st Château with Pool, near St Emilion

Set in seven hectares of park and garden, entered through beautiful wrought iron gates, Le Breuil is very much a family home. Furnished in keeping with the period, much of the interior is quite original and still has the Regency style décor. Sleeps up to 10 people. Internet access although slow.

Near a country market town and within reach of local vineyards and several good restaurants.

This is an ideal base to discover the Bordeaux, St Emilion and Buzet wine areas. There is a boating lake and fishing lake approximately 7 kms distance.  An hour's drive from Arcachon and the Atlantic beaches. Bordeaux 40 minutes.

History of the Property

The great architect Louis, who also designed and built most of Bordeaux at the time, rebuilt the château in 1790 for Napoleon's composer and 1st violinist, Pierre Rode. He also designed the beautiful Grand Théatre in Bordeaux and the famous staircase at the Opéra de Paris. There are many similarities between Le Breuil and Château Margaux, another of Louis houses, notably about the entrance and the cornices.

Rode's lover at the time was Giuseppina Grassini, a very beautiful soprano known as La Grassini, who was also Napoleon's mistress. Later she went to England and became Wellington's lover. History does not record whether she entertained both men at Le Breuil at the same time!

Holiday Accommodation at Chateau Le Breuil

After arriving at Chateau Le Breuil, climbing the steps, you enter through the main entrance into:

  • The colonnaded grand entrance hall with a magnificent and elegant stone staircase winding up to the first floor.

From the hall, passages lead to the Grand Salon, the terrace overlooking the park, and the Dining Room.

  • Le Grand Salon (the large living room) is a magnificent room which has kept its Napolonic style. It boasts a striking marble fireplace, magnificent book cases and period furniture. The French windows lead out onto the long terrace, which overlooks the park.

Across the passage from Le Grand Salon is:

  • The spectacular Dining Room featuring solid oak dining table capable of seating at least fourteen persons. Other features include a sparkling chandelier, an enormous tapestry and a splendid fireplace and chimney.
  • There is a large fully equipped kitchen, which includes a cooker with five gas rings and a large oven, a large American fridge / freezer, a micro-wave oven, dishwasher and washing machine. Breakfast can be taken at the breakfast table or on the terrace.
  • One bedroom is located on the ground floor wing of the Château with bathroom and separate WC.

The main staircase climbs to the 1st floor landing and is dominated by two large modern paintings. From the landing you have an impressive view of the entrance hall. There are four bedrooms, bathroom and shower room with WC and separate WC on the 1st floor.

  • The master bedroom with en-suite bathroom, features a Charles X sleigh bed, and overlooks the front garden and entrance to the Château.
  • One bedroom has twin beds and overlooks the park at the back of the Château.
  • One bedroom features a 19th Century four poster double bed also overlooking the park at the back
  • One bedroom has three beds and overlooks the park at the back of the Château.

About St Pardoux Du Breuil in Lot-et-Garonne, Aquitaine

The Lot-et-Garonne is in the Aquitaine region of southwest France and has all the ingredients for a good holiday - uncluttered landscapes, empty roads, clean rivers and good regional cuisine. The village of Saint-Pardoux-du-Breuil is in the Marmandais area on the river of the Garonne, a region of gentle rolling countryside and pretty villages where weekly markets are held in the cobbled squares.

The département abounds with tree covered hills and fertile valleys of mixed prairie, farmland and woodlands which are home to a wealth of birds and other wildlife, including red squirrels. Chateaux are to be seen on hilltops and there are many castles, which are well worth visiting.

Bastide villages are still centres of local country life and their market squares offer a multitude of opportunities to taste the local food and mix with the locals. The produce from this region is famous throughout France. Agriculture is one of the Lot-et-Garonne's main activities. There are some sheep and cattle, but the land is mainly devoted to growing various kinds of food crops. Cereals, particularly maize, figure prominently, and fruit growing is a speciality. The immediate area is the market garden of France with many salad products grown here - you have to try the sweet Marmande tomato! The department is noted for its plums, the famous Agen pruneaux, strawberries and succulent melons.

Marmande has all essential shops and facilities including several cafes and restaurants, banks and a market on Monday mornings, where you can find fresh local fruit and vegetables, goat's cheese and honey made on nearby farms, flowers and Marmandaise and Buzet wines.

There is a good choice of restaurants within a reasonable distance from here, in particular, the l'Escale restaurant in Pont-des-Sables about 10 minutes from away and the Ferme Auberge in Tonneins. Worth a stop in the village of Puymician just outside Marmande is a pottery, which specialises in wonderfully baroque terracotta garden urns.

St Emilion wines have been famous for centuries and the town itself is full of interest. It lies perched on a hilltop about thirty minutes from the château and although the medieval walls are now partly concealed by houses, a walk or drive around the outside gives a good idea of what it must have been like in medieval times. It is still a pleasure to walk around the narrow cobbled streets and peer into the craft shops, stop at the wine museum or to see the vast underground wine cellars. Visits to some of the vineyards can be arranged from there.
