At the foot of Mont Ventoux, Mas lou Parpaioun (lou Parpaioun is provencal for butterfly) offers you a quiet, spacious and very comfortable spot for your holidays. It was built in 1872 in a characteristic provencal style, using local building materials. The house has recently been restored to a high standard keeping many of it's orginal features... old tiled floors, beautiful beams and large fireplaces. It even has an old well in the garden.
The garden is bordered on one side by a small stream (le Groseau) and on the other by the vineyards. The property has views of the Baronnies mountains and the famous Mont Ventoux (the Giant of Provence).
Ten years ago we settled down in Crestet, where we are co-owners of Domaine du Crestet - five luxury holiday homes. Based upon our experiences during restoring and managing these we have renovated lou Parpaioun into an authentic and comfortable luxury holiday residence for 10 people.
Domaine du Crestet, where our home is based should you need us, is a short 2 minute walk away .
Mas lou Parpaioun comprises:
All bedrooms have first class beds (90 x 200 or 180 x 200 cm), all single beds can be combined to form a double bed on request .
All rooms are equipped with heating for the winter and air-conditioning for the summer.
In front of the house there is a big, partially covered terrace with bbq, dining table and comfortable garden chairs to relax in during your stay. In the big garden you will find all kinds of provencal herbs, flowers and trees. Our swimming pool (10 x 4.1) with comfortable sunbeds is heated from April until October to allow all season swimming pleasure.
35 km east of the Rhone river in the upper part of the Provence, the recently restored property Mas lou Parpaioun is located in the valley of the Ouveze, just 3 km south of Vaison-la-Romaine in the French department of Vaucluse. You will find green countryside bordered on the west side by the rocky Dentelles de Montmirail (734m) and on the east side by the pre-Alpes, with the dominating Mont Ventoux at a height of 1912m visible from the property.
This valley has a very mild climate with over 300 days of sunshine a year with a long summer providing comfortable temperatures between 25 and 32 degrees Celsius in July and August.
Le Crestet (pop. 440) is a small protected medieval historical village on top of a hill. Surrounded by vineyards, olive and almond trees it has many small alleyways with beautiful architecture. The Financial Times quoted it as one of the best preserved medieval small villages of Provence. At the top of the village is a small castle with a square that provides a staggering view over the valley, Mont Ventoux and the valley of Crestet. Lou Parpaioun is situated just several hundred meters east of the village center at the bottom of the hill. Crestet has 3 restaurants.

A beautifully renovated property - the owners have done a fantastic job of restoration. Each bedroom had its own character (and we all had our favourite), and the property has a fantastic, well equipped kitchen. Our favourite feature was the garden - a great pool, but also thought had been put into the landscaping. The hammocks by the stream were a favourite place to relax, the constant supply of fresh tomatoes and herbs from the garden were fantastic, and the boules pitch the scene of many tense family competitions.
With a great local wine to be purchased just up the road, and lovely medieval towns just a short drive away, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and hope to return soon.

Very well located (Vaison la Romaine nearby), quiet, pleasant little creek on one side of property, building comfortable for a group of eight, excellent large well equipped kitchen, cozy living room with fireplace, TV and CD player, four bedrooms with full bath are suitable for couples or families, main floor half bath is handy, storage for bikes, great outdoor eating and gathering facilities in a very large yard (two tables for 8 to 10, one under awning and one at pool side, BBQ, lawn chairs, hammocks), extra large water tank allows multiple simultaneous showers and laundering without hot water shortage, well maintained inside and out, garden with fresh veggies a bonus, owners live nearby and are quite responsive ( they gave a very informative tutorial upon arrival), good family restaurant half block away. Good value.
Three bedrooms lack bathroom privacy for singles sharing the room, parking is awkward for more then one car, no telephone.
Eric Wijnen has responded to the above........"Both bathroom privacy and car park availability have been improved during the second part of the renovation of the house. Telephone (landline) will be available upon request for the 2011 season."
