A beautifully restored characterful 'maison de maitre', entirely surrounded by its own grounds with a large secluded pool, sauna and beautiful views. A perfect setting for a tranquil family holiday, within striking distance of a variety of activities to suit all members of the family.
The house sleeps 12 people in comfort, but we accept smaller parties at reduced rates out of high season – please ask for prices.
There is a good choice of typical french markets, supermarkets and restaurants nearby, or we can provide some meals for you at the house (please ask to see a menu).
On your arrival we provide you with everything you will need to get you started on your holiday (including a drink), but we can also stock the fridge for you before you arrive.
You will be completely at peace during your stay, but we are on hand if you need anything, from advice about local amenities to help with translation. We live in a separate house behind the logis, out of sight and earshot.
The house, a typical Charentais manor house dating from the 17th to 19th centuries, has been lovingly restored to the highest standard using period furniture, but has been conceived to offer flexible accommodation and privacy to large families or smaller groups. For example, each double room also has a single bed so it can be used as a twin or family room. We also have 2 modern cots for infants.
There are 4 large double bedrooms (each with an additional single bed) and 2 twin bedrooms. Each of the double bedrooms has its own shower/bathroom and toilet, and the twin bedrooms share a large family bathroom and toilet. One of the double bedrooms is on the ground floor and and has direct access from the back garden and to the rest of the house, so would be convenient for someone with reduced mobility.
There is a large dining room, sitting room, an additional TV room and a study with a wide choice of books.
The kitchen is fully equipped and has an American style fridge freezer, which also produces ice and chilled filtered water.
There is a large (14 foot) trampoline and adjoining the large (12 x 6m) swimming pool, a large shady barn containing a badminton court, sauna, table tennis, table football and 2 large barbecues.
The front of the house opens onto a large garden with beautiful views in all directions, and there is another enclosed garden at the back of the house. The house itself sits on its own hill, with only its outbuildings and the owners own home out of sight behind it.
The Logis de La Vaure is situated in beautiful rolling countryside characterised by small vineyards, fields of sunflowers and forest. There are food shops about 5 minutes from the property by car and the weekly markets of Chalais and Barbezieux are both 10-15 minutes away by car. This is also where you will find the majority of the local restaurants, though there are always discoveries to be made in the many pretty little villages that nestle in the countryside.
In July, Chalais hosts a 3-day international show jumping competition, and in September the streets of the medieval ramparts of Angouleme (30 mins) resound to a weekend of vintage car racing.
Nearby (within 10-15 minutes) are plenty of activities, including a swimming lake with sandy beach and crazy golf, horse riding, and even a Safari Park full of local fauna (e.g. wild boar and deer). We are in the cognac growing region, and so there are many small producers offering their own Cognac for sale, along with their wines and the local speciality 'Pineau des Charentes'.
Further afield, we are within striking distance of the sandy beaches of the coast (about 1hr 15m), and are an hour from the beautiful World Heritage sites of Bordeaux and St Emilion, famous for their wines but also their lovely architecture and ambiance.
See Local guide and map for information on nearby towns and facilities.
La Vaure is accessible by air by a variety of airlines flying into (in order of proximity) Angouleme, Bordeaux, Bergerac, Poitiers, Limoges and La Rochelle airports. The nearest TGV train station is in nearby Angouleme, and this will take you to London by way of Paris or Lille in about 7 hrs.
By road, a straightforward route following the A10 and N10 from the north coast of France will get you to within 15 minutes of the house in about 7 hours, and it is possible to drive from the southern counties of England in under a day.
For those with a light aircraft, there is an airfield at Rioux Martin, about 15 minutes away by car.
See Local guide and map for information on nearby towns and airports.
