Deep in the Perigord Vert, hidden in a small valley just outside the village of Busserolles is the estate of Chez Bigot (the ‘t’ is silent!), a small Chateau built in the 1600’s and once a forge supplying cannonballs for the Napleonic wars.
The buildings have been extensively restored to provide the owners main residency and a holiday cottage within the 20 acres of pasture and woodland. The grounds are bordered on three sides by the river Trieux.
The Guardians Cottage originally housed the caretaker’s family and has now been converted to a charming Gite, providing luxury accommodation on one level for those wanting to relax from the day to day stresses of modern life.
Guests can explore the 20 acres of meadows, woods and river. In the summer, the river provides a perfect adventure area for young and old alike. Walk the river path through the dappled wood, look for crayfish and mussels in the shallows and splash about in the deeper pools. Rarely does the river exceed waste deep and the abundance of birds and fish provide hours of distraction. Picnic benches are dotted about, so take your pick…..
Let us help you to relax and enjoy all the area has to offer!
The Guardians Cottage is a large two bedroomed cottage with ensuite bathrooms and all modern facilities. Sleeping 4-6 it is suitable for a family or group of friends.
The front door leads into:
Both bedrooms are complimented by Egyptian cotton bedlinen and plenty of wardrobe space.
Outside
There is a large terrace, enclosed courtyard with barbecue and lawn.
Chez Bigot is found just outside from the sleepy village of Busserolles. There are several market towns (Piegut, Nontron and Brantome) and chateaux within an hour's drive. The local market is in the town of Piegut and is one of the oldest and busiest in the Dordogne. The nearest coastal resort is La Rochelle, some two and a half hours distance.
The Dordogne is known as the stomach of France and you will find restaurants to cater for all appetites and budgets. Many of the local restaurants specialise in regional fare, fois gras, duck, confit and truffles often feature on their menus.
See Local guide and map for information on nearby towns and facilities.
Driving: Calais is about a 7 hour drive; Caen slightly less. Driving in France is quick and easy. The motorways are generally clear, Paris can be avoided and there are plenty of rest stops on the way down. Most manage the trip in a day.
The area is very well served by local airports - carriers such as RyanAir and Flybe have several fights each week from all corners of the UK coming into Limoges, Bordeaux or Bergerac, where a car can be hired. Taking the Eurostar and then TGV, the station to arrive in is Angouleme, where again a car can be hired - we are 45-minutes from both Angouleme and Limoges.
With sufficient notice, and depending on the number in the party, we can meet you in either Limoges or Angouleme, and provide transport to our property. We can also help with hire cars etc if required.
But why not forget about the car. Book a flight and we can pick you up, arrange for bike hire (or bring your own) or simply base yourself here for a walking holiday - we can drop you off and collect, arrange for packed lunches and trips to the local markets etc.

The property is perfectly presented, spacious and well equipped , all set in a stunning location. The owners are friendly and helpful; should you need any guidance of areas or places to visit during your stay then they are also extremely knowledgeable and have plenty of advice.
There are endless options during your stay depending on what you want from your holiday; from relaxing in your own Garden, to visiting the numerous Chateaux's and towns in the area; those with children will probably enjoy the local lake & beach at St Estephe ( refreshingly no charges for parking, or entry ) not forgetting those with a more active disposition with great cycling roads and numerous walking options.
We have stayed twice now, and would throughly recommend this property without hesitation.

The Guardians Cottage was perfect - an idyllic setting for a relaxing holiday. The gite is beautifully restored, with loads of room, an excellent kitchen, fantastic bathrooms (two!) and a lovely peaceful garden. We quickly felt completely at home and really hated to leave. Our hosts were also perfect, providing everything we needed and giving us lots of tips on places to go in the area. Our aim was to do some walking, cycling, gentle sightseeing and relaxing - and the Guardians Cottage was ideal for that. No TV, no internet - heaven!
It's a beautiful corner of France - all I can say is, Go There!

We had a lovely relaxed family holiday here. A lovely welcome from the owners, and everything needed by a family of 7 (children aged 9-16). Very comfortable beds, high spec accommodation and lovely rural surroundings.

We had a really nice time at Guardians cottage. The site is situated in a wonderful area of natural and beautiful countryside with so much wildlife. The cottage is well equipped and clean. It provided everything we needed to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The accommodation was very comfortable and the owners made us feel very welcome. Ideal for everyone both young and old!
There are plenty of walks and if that's too strenuous you can relax in the pretty cottage garden taking in the sun and surroundings. The cottage is about 2-3 kilometres from local villages with local shops that can supply fresh bread and general groceries. There are plenty of places of interest to visit not too far away and certainly not many cars on the road so driving around was a breeze!!
It was a pleasure to stay at Guardians Cottage and we hope to return again one day!

We had a great time when we stayed at Guardian's Cottage for two weeks in June 2010. The cottage is in a beautiful rural area and we very much enjoyed relaxing in the peaceful countryside.
The cottage accommodation suited our needs perfectly as it was clean, comfortable and spacious with a well equipped kitchen. Having two bathrooms was a real plus point for us as we had two teenagers and a baby with us so it saved on arguments! The owners were very accommodating in supplying us with all the kit for the baby (cot, highchair, toys etc) which was great as it meant we didn't need to bring too much gear with us.
Having Sam and Mary, the owners, on site was a real plus point as they were able to advise us on local attractions, restaurants and even the best place for patisserie (the yellow bakery in nearby Piegut!). Mary was kind enough to make bookings at restaurants for us when our French failed us (which it frequently did).
We found plenty to do in the surrounding area such as shopping in Limoges, exploring the caves at Villars with their prehistoric art, go-karting at a fantastic local outdoor track and building sandcastles aplenty at the beach at the local lake at St Estephe. There was enough to keep the teenagers amused which is no mean feat!
I would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a relaxing family holiday.
