About Quarre Les Tombes in Yonne, Burgundy
Quarre les Tombes is a quiet village situated on the top of a hill dominated by a 16th century church. Surrounding the church are 112 sarcophagi, the origins of which are still a mystery and which give the village it's name.
Enjoying the local food and wine is an essential of the holiday and Quarre lesTombes offers a sumptuous selection of goodies.
The superb boulangerie offers a great selection of breads, pastries, fantastic fruit tarts and cakes also a wide selection of locally made jams, chutneys and preserves. Check out the onion chutney, delicious but expect to queue - it's very popular with locals and tourists alike.
As if that was not enough, next door is an award winning chocolatiere. The display at Easter is stunning, last year it was a whole village in Chocolate heaven.
An excellent delicatessen serves local cheeses and pates, georgeous [to go with the onion chutney] cooked meats, oils and olives. All great with crusty French bread for lunch.
The boucherie offers a full range of high quality meat, not cheap but the best one in the area. You can order a freshly spit roasted chicken, great with salad and French bread
Sundays and Tuesdays there is a small market selling local produce, cheeses, eggs, fruit and veg, wine, clothes, plants etc ...
Two small grocery shops can provide almost anything else you may want.........bread, milk, loo rolls etc and their wine section takes up a large part of the shop (as it should).
There is a pharmacy, hairdressers, doctors and a couple of Aladdin's Cave style shops, which are well worth a rummage. 2 garages (one of which sells fuel), a small library and tennis court.
Eating and drinking in Quarre les Tombes
There is an excellent restaurant Le Morvan and the Hotel du Nord. Between them they offer you the opportunity to relish the great food and wines of Burgundy. Check out the Creme Brulee at Le Morvan exquisite. Just 5 minutes drive from the village is the excellent Auberge de L'Atre with it's fantastic wine list and the winner of a Michelan star award.
The village bar Quarre Creme right in the square is owned by Sebastian and Christine. They are very friendly and will give you a warm welcome . In July and August on a Friday night, there is live music and sometimes impromptu concerts on a Sunday by a local band. (Don't worry, although the house is in the village it's far enough away not to be bothered by the music).
The village Brasserie is worth a visit. The food is good and the locals eat there.
Avallon and Saulieu are both about 20 minutes drive away and really interesting towns. The ramparts of Avallon and the guided tour of Saulieu are both well worth taking a look at.
Auxerre and Dijon (the capital of Burgundy) are an hour away and great historical places to visit.
Beaune with it's beautiful Hospice and wine heritage need a full day to appreciate.
Vezelay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a medieval hilltop town with it's fortifications dominated by the Basilica of St Madeleine (12th-13th century). It's considered to be a masterpiece of Romanesque art for the exceptional architecture and the quality of it's scultured decorations. Inside is beautiful in it's simplicity.
Bazoches, the home of Marchal de Vauban who was born in the nearby village of St Leger Vauban, he was Louis XIV's military engineer and introduced the Star Forts to France.
Bibracte was a Celtic city where archealogic digs are currently going on, there is a fascinating museum there and the walk up through the unusual trees to the top is worth the effort. On a clear day you can see Mt Blanc. (You can drive up).
For those who love walking, numerous forest walks directly from the house.
