About Cherval in Dordogne, Aquitaine

This is rural France, perfect for walkers/ramblers, cyclists, artists and those wishing to explore the region by car. The countryside is just beautiful, with undulating hills and sunflower fields, wild flower meadows, brooks and streams.

The Dordogne has managed to escape commercialism on a large scale unlike its many neighbours and still manages to retain in its entirety the true authentic charm of rural France. This region has chateaux and medieval villages in abundance. Throughout the summer months, there are many local markets, 'brocantes' , fetes and music festivals.

You can sample traditional French cuisines from one of the many village bistros or visit a local vineyard.

Only 20 minutes away is the picturesque town of Brantome, know as ‘the little Venice’of the Dordogne. Set on the banks of the Dronne, it is delightful to visit with its small shops, restaurants and cafes, including one Michelin starred restaurant. It has a colourful market every Friday. Boat trips are available and kayak and canoe facilities abound on the banks of the river. There are caves dating from pre-historic times and beautiful medieval Abbey buildings.

Aubeterre another local historic favourite with the tourists, famous for its monolithic church and caves, again with a village square full of arty and quirky little shops and cafes, perfect for a sunday afternoon. A typical French square with alfresco dining in the centre. For the golf fanatics, there is a good 9 hole golf course. There is also a man made beach ideal for families situated next to the large river fed lake.

The cities of Perigueux and Angouleme are also within 40 minutes drive from the Chateau and are large historic towns. Angouleme is a fortified walled city, with winding cobbled streets, markets and hosts the world cartoon festival (bon dessiné). In September the streets are closed for the Vintage Car Racing and Rally (circuit des remparts). Perigueux too is full of winding streets a magnificent cathedral, cafes and tea shops and charming independent boutiques. Angouleme also has an airport with flights back to Gatwick and the TGV to Paris in 2hrs 15 minutes and London within 6 hours.

For those wine connoisseurs, the fabulous roman town of Saint-Emillion is full of little wine shops and perfect for wine tasting and dining with its many restaurants. The town itself is steeped in history and dates back 2000 years. Well worth a visit. There is also the city of Bordeaux just over an hour away, set on the Dordogne and Gironde rivers, it has fabulous architecture and a café/restaurant culture. Bergerac too is nearby, with its light and fruity wines and pretty streets and market square.

Cognac for those brandy drinkers is just an hour away too and you can arrange visits to the Hennessey and Courvoisier Chais and museums, its also a popular town for jazz and blues and has many festivals throughout the summer months.
