Quiet Stone-Built Village Property with Extensive Rural Views

A stone-built, two-bedroomed house of considerable character set in a spectacular rural landscape at the edge of a small, traditionally French hamlet, packed with original features but offering a spacious, open-plan living area and modern equipment / facilities.

Set on the edge of a quiet, stone-built village maintaining its traditional, rural skills and lifestyle, offering a long and well documented history. The interior of this solid, unpretentious house, built by a farmer for his large family, reflects the area - full of simple pleasures, surprises and honesty, yet offers the unique features of the best of country character and style, devoid of crude commercialism. Amid spectacular pastoral fields and woods on rolling hills.

On the other hand, you can spend hours watching the comings and goings of the villagers down the hillside below, over the lawned garden. Sometimes even the blacksmith at work, or the horses and livestock over or along the valley below.

(Redon is to be recommended!)

  • Kitchen: There is a large fridge freezer that enables one to store the few items not available in the well-stocked village shop. About St Ganton in Ille-et-Vilaine, Brittany

Located in a rural area this stone-built house is situated on a hillside, at the edge of a quiet, traditionally French hamlet, with exceptional panoramic views from the rear facing windows (the living/dining area and a bedroom).

Parking and access to the living area is conveniently level! Overlooking the rooftops of three or four village properties at most in any direction, En Plein Air offers distant views toward Redon, a gentle, grassy valley with grazing sheep or cattle, a hillside of woods and lush pasture as shown in the photograph.

Thus, it benefits from the peace of quiet country lanes while providing a touring base to reach some fine towns and picturesque villages conveniently accessed by the main D177 road only four miles away.

Within easy, fairly flat walking over the plateau straight out of the house and the hamlet, one finds fields of wild flowers, woods with many fine chestnut trees, other small hamlets and a timeless rural life, the recipe for relaxing, with hardly a car or person to be seen.

A little further is the river with its pleasant riverside path where the local fishermen are friendly and willing to chat, even share a bottle of wine if you attempt their language.

Essential for a relaxing holiday, you are within 100 yards of a self-service, well stocked village shop, accessed by its rear stone steps from only 50 yards from the house. The bar offers fresh bread daily and servies delicious morning coffees to the local inhabitants and passersby as well as lunchtime meals. Next to the shop is a full-sized garage offering a range of fuels.

This is an unspoilt region where the inhabitants are not tired of endless visitors and are welcoming, helpful and willing to please.

The comparatively quiet D177, approx 4 miles away, gives speedy access to the wonderful shops, market and restaurants of Redon with its quay and riverside views, as well as its large hyper or super markets and factory shops. 2000 year old Rennes with its amazing department stores and stunning ancient wooden town houses, also provides an insight into Bretagne rural life with the supersize Brocante (second hand furniture and ornaments that are irresistible).

The coast makes a pleasant ride, and the variety it offers makes it feel like a trip to Cornwall, Devon and Dorset rolled into one, all manageable on a day trip; it can include Pennestin, L'Or de Mine with its yellow cliffs, La Roche, St Bernard - a picturesque harbour with magnificent views over the river that flows to the nearby open sea, and the wartime submarine bunkers of La Nazaire.

The property is not too far to reach the interesting coastal town of Piriac sur Mer, offering fresh seafoods and, the place that the French like to visit, the renowned La Baule with its magnificent, almost endless golden sands.

A trip along the wild coastline of La Cote Sauvage could include a visit to Guerande - a wonderful little walled, medieval town especially enchanting on a bank holiday Sunday evening when it is thronging with French families, dipping into its delightful range of craft shops and market stalls.

The interesting museum attached to the traditional salt pans near Les Quatre Vents (La Marais) makes a change from the many country rambles or rides available from the house. There is a large sales area for gifts and samples as well as quantities for cooking and preserving.

For the adventurous, Carnac makes a fascinating, incomparable day out, both for its beach and the amazing acres of prehistoric standing stones.

However, you hardly have to leave the area around the property to savour a wide variety of interesting architecture and archaeology, as at St.Just, about five miles away, there is a small avenue of interesting standing stones that must have been selected for their variety of colour and texture; close by to that, a little lakeside walk with craggy, rocky banks under trees!

Other unmissable local visits are to Josselin, featuring a stunning, imposing chateau (castle) overlooking the quiet river, originating in the 11th century and rebuilt in the 14th century, in its present fairy tale grandeur with its many towers.

The amazing wooden carvings on the little timber houses at Malesdroit, the jewel of a picturesque town at Rochefort-en-terre (the one place that is likely to be full of tourists all year because it is featured in every information office) the history at La Gacilly, the delights of Guipry where one can fish and paddle, and the tiny hamlet of Langon with its Roman Chapel.

You could by-pass this delightful region, heading for the south but you would be overlooking a genuine taste of France on quiet roads with ample picnic areas, safe for cyclist and walker, and still have the chance to buy a huge range of interesting but reasonable wines in the off-licence on the outskirts of Redon, unless you want to stock up at the massive wine secton in Leclerc at St Nicholas de Redon.

Both spacious, living area that has high ceilings, beamed and boarded in oak and the back bedroom provide the opportunity to enjoy a spectacular, panoramic view of exceptional charm and distance, from the table, settee or bed!

The spacious and comfortable open-plan style living, with large settees and ample dining facilities, adjacent to the decent sized kitchen area, with full sized electric cooker and hob, to allow one to cook full evening meals, and offers a place to relax whether with music, English television or a good book.

En Plein Air is a veritable gem in which to chill out at the end of a day of activity with a drink, or over a full dinner and to enjoy the warmth of the afternoon and evening sun from its uninterrupted south western facing aspect. The large windows and original glazed door opposite, allow a breeze to blow through without loss of privacy.

The bedrooms and bathroom also have original stone features and beams giving charm and character and a genuinely different experience.

To summarize, this property, built in an era when things were made to last, offers a change from the fitted carpets, tiles or laminate floors of modern England, yet provides the clean, modern facilities that one might expect to find at home, like the two large, comfortable settees, facing an inglenook fireplace and the modern units. It is well stocked with cooking and dining ware.

The property has a patio that is made of granite chips, surrounded by strong wooden surrounds.

The lawn is well maintained and slopes away from the property. It is very warm, with  the sun shining on the stone wall all day behind the patio.

Sometimes seen are tiny, shy lizards running up the house wall, to bask in the heat.

The side access to the back garden is sloped and partly stepped, but well within the capabilities of adults and children.
