Two High Quality Gites in Rural a Rural Setting near Najac With Lovely Views
This is a very special place. Our stone-built former farm lies on the side of a hill near the medieval town of Najac, with far-reaching views across the valley towards Cordes. Over time, it has mellowed and weathered to become an integral part of the surrounding landscape, with a feeling of tranquillity which many guests comment upon.
Formerly a stable and a barrel workshop, our two beautifully renovated gites are furnished to a high standard in a simple, smart, country style, combining French and English furniture in a sympathetic way, with well-equipped kitchens, and good quality linens throughout. We are happy to let them separately or together.
The setting is peaceful and beautiful, with a garden, ten metre pool, large meadow and woodland with tracks leading down the valley to the river below. Come and enjoy scenic walks, read your book by the pool, or explore the medieval towns, markets, wine districts, caves and many other attractions in the local area. Kayaking, tennis and horse riding are available locally.
Holiday Accommodation at L'Ecurie for 2 to 4 people
We offer a 10% reduction for parties of 2 people.
L'Ecurie, formerly a stable, has been converted into a very comfortable gite and has far-reaching views across the countryside from most rooms.
The ground floor is light and bright and welcoming, with:
- Comfy sofas, a dining table and chairs, and French doors leading onto a large shady terrace fringed with wisteria, rosemary and lavender. Here there is a very long dining table and chairs, easy chairs and a barbecue, making it a perfect place for al fresco dining, reading a book in the shade or just watching the sunset.
- The kitchen area is equipped to a high standard, with a very good selection of utensils, gadgets, pots, pans etc. The ground floor is tiled throughout.
On the first floor there are:
- Three bedrooms: The master bedroom has a high vaulted ceiling and a very fine four-poster bed, while the second and third bedrooms can each be arranged as a double or a twin, to suit your party. The layout of l'Ecurie enables one double bedroom and the adjoining bathroom to be closed off to provide a separate suite, if some of your party would like additional privacy.
- A shower room and a bathroom with slipper bath.
Throughout l'Ecurie there is a mix of simple, good quality French and English furniture, furnishings and linens which complements the building. The first floor has seagrass flooring throughout, except for the bathrooms which have wooden floors.
About Najac in Aveyron, Midi Pyrenees
This is a most lovely rural area within easy reach of local towns and cities. Le Puech de Barrayre is situated about eight kilometres west of Najac, on the side of a hill overlooking a river valley and woodland, with views to the far distance in the direction of Cordes. Come and follow the tracks to the river and the old mills alongside it. You are likely to see many species of birds, butterflies, wild flowers, orchids in late spring, and the hummingbird hawk moth taking nectar from flowers in the garden. Nearby there are hundreds of square miles of forest with well-marked tracks. Or stay by the pool and enjoy the lush setting, and your book.
Tucked away in remote valleys, or perched on high peaks are ancient abbeys, fortified towns and citadels: you're just five miles from Najac, which stands on an outcrop of rock surrounded by wooded hillsides and the gorge of the Aveyron river. The very long narrow 15th-century town, its square and castle remain totally intact, and remarkable. If you can prise yourself away from the peace of Barrayre, there is so much to see. Along the valley of the Tarn are some of the region's prettiest towns including Gaillac, known for its wine, and Albi with its fine red brick cathedral and a museum dedicated to Toulouse Lautrec. Half an hour's drive to the north of Barrayre is the valley of the Lot, one of France's most appealing regions, with rocky limestone "causses" or cliffs containing underground caverns, and fertile plains with walnut groves and some of the finest villages in France.
St. Antonin Noble Val, a medieval town twenty minutes' drive away along the gorge of the Aveyron river, has one of the very best Sunday markets in the area, and is a very interesting place to explore, have lunch or just sit and enjoy the day.
