Two High Quality Gites in Rural a Rural Setting near Najac With Lovely Views
This is a very special place. Our stone-built former farm lies on the side of a hill near the medieval town of Najac, with far-reaching views across the valley towards Cordes. Over time, it has mellowed and weathered to become an integral part of the surrounding landscape, with a feeling of tranquillity which many guests comment upon.
Formerly a stable and a barrel workshop, our two beautifully renovated gites are furnished to a high standard in a simple, smart, country style, combining French and English furniture in a sympathetic way, with well-equipped kitchens, and good quality linens throughout. We are happy to let them separately or together.
The setting is peaceful and beautiful, with a garden, ten metre pool, large meadow and woodland with tracks leading down the valley to the river below. Come and enjoy scenic walks, read your book by the pool, or explore the medieval towns, markets, wine districts, caves and many other attractions in the local area. Kayaking, tennis and horse riding are available locally.
Holiday Accommodation at La Grange for 2 people
La Grange was originally a sawmill in which barrels were made, and the characterful interior retains some of its original features and exposed stone walls. In addition there is a very pleasing mix of simple, good quality French and English furniture, furnishings and linens.
The large barn doors open from the terrace onto:
- The salle de jour, with terracotta tiled floor and a beamed ceiling. There are comfy sofas, rattan chairs, dining table and chairs, satellite television with DVD.
- If you feel like trying some French cooking, the kitchen area is very smart and well-equipped, and we believe that it has everything you need. Please contact us if you would like more details.
On the first floor there is:
- A mezzanine area with single bed, and steps to a galleried area with two single beds. Children especially like this under-the-eaves area. Please note that it is open plan.
- There is a separate double bedroom with king-size French-style sleigh bed, wardrobe and seagrass flooring.
La Grange has a shower room.
If you visit outside the hot summer period, feel free to use the inviting wood-burning stove, supplemented by electric heaters. (Firewood is provided.) La Grange is the perfect base for a spring or autumn walking holiday.
La Grange's driveway leads to a sunny terrace, barbecue, and gazebo covered with wisteria and a vine, which provide shade for a table and chairs. From the terrace there are lovely views across the gardens to the wooded valley beyond.
About Najac in Aveyron, Midi Pyrenees
This is a most lovely rural area within easy reach of local towns and cities. Le Puech de Barrayre is situated about eight kilometres west of Najac, on the side of a hill overlooking a river valley and woodland, with views to the far distance in the direction of Cordes. Come and follow the tracks to the river and the old mills alongside it. You are likely to see many species of birds, butterflies, wild flowers, orchids in late spring, and the hummingbird hawk moth taking nectar from flowers in the garden. Nearby there are hundreds of square miles of forest with well-marked tracks. Or stay by the pool and enjoy the lush setting, and your book.
Tucked away in remote valleys, or perched on high peaks are ancient abbeys, fortified towns and citadels: you're just five miles from Najac, which stands on an outcrop of rock surrounded by wooded hillsides and the gorge of the Aveyron river. The very long narrow 15th-century town, its square and castle remain totally intact, and remarkable. If you can prise yourself away from the peace of Barrayre, there is so much to see. Along the valley of the Tarn are some of the region's prettiest towns including Gaillac, known for its wine, and Albi with its fine red brick cathedral and a museum dedicated to Toulouse Lautrec. Half an hour's drive to the north of Barrayre is the valley of the Lot, one of France's most appealing regions, with rocky limestone "causses" or cliffs containing underground caverns, and fertile plains with walnut groves and some of the finest villages in France.
St. Antonin Noble Val, a medieval town twenty minutes' drive away along the gorge of the Aveyron river, has one of the very best Sunday markets in the area, and is a very interesting place to explore, have lunch or just sit and enjoy the day.
