Situated above a rocky weir on the banks of a river dotted with islands and surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in S W France, we can offer comfortable cottage-style self catering accommodation in a tranquil, idyllic setting. Laze along our river banks, fishing and boating. We are five minutes from a pretty village which has all amenities, centrally placed  for exploring the surrounding countryside with its vineyards and medieval towns.

The Mill Cottage is right on the riverside, you can moor your canoe alongside, or fish from the property. Limited fishing equipment is available free of charge.

We are surrounded by farmland, woodland, and river. The water flows over a rocky, gradual weir and continues downstream in the direction of Lavardac - a wonderful opportunity to explore the countryside by boat. Across the river the great forests of the Landes begin, offering walking and riding trails, wild-life and bird-watching.

The light  in this area is very special - an Artists paradise!! - river, farmland, rolling hills, beautiful trees, forests.....set up your easel in our meadow.

About Mezin in Lot-et-Garonne, Aquitaine

Ideally placed in the middle of South West France we are situated on the southern edge of the Lot et Garonne; the departments of the Gers and Landes are within a couple of miles. We are equal distance from 4 Airports and two amazing cities, Toulouse and Bordeaux.  A great location for exploring the countryside or house-hunting, or perhaps both!

The Mill Cottage is situated on a river just outside the pretty village of Mezin. (1.1/2 miles away) which has all necessary facilities – butcher; baker; grocer; patisserie; terrific delicatessen; pharmacy; bank – with ‘hole in the wall’; newsagents; hairdressers; library; plus several small restaurants and a bar. There is a full village market on Sunday morning and a small farmer’s market with fish van on Thursday morning. During the summer months Mezin and other local villages hold fetes and festivals with street parties, outdoor suppers, dancing and fireworks - everyone is welcome to join in.

The Route de Compostelle passes through this area– pilgrims have travelled this route for centuries –  they still travel this way today. One of the small footpaths on the Route leads through the woods nearby, across farmland from the mill to the village (45 mins on foot).

This is a quiet and tranquil area ideal for observing nature. The Forests of the Landes start on the other side of the river and cover several thousand acres before meeting up with the coast along the Bay of Biscay. Deer and Wild Boar wander across the surrounding farmland in and out of the forests. Red Squirrel, Genet, Foxes and many other animals reside in the neighbouring woodland. There are Golden Oriole (not often seen, but frequently heard) Green as well as Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers, Hoopoe, Heron and Kingfisher, Redstart and Nuthatch, Mallard and Moorhen.

Within minutes of the cottage you can be in the beautiful rolling countryside with its rich farming land or visiting the domaines and vineyards, sampling locally produced wines - Buzet – Cotes de Gascogne. Armagnac is distilled locally. The Bordeaux, Medoc, Cotes de Duras and Entre Deux Mer wine producing areas are not far away.

Nearby Nerac is a bustling town on the river Baise, once the home of Henri d’Albret and the kings of Navarre one of whom later became Henri IV, King of France. The remaining section of their Chateau stands in the middle of the town overlooking the river. Nerac has an important Market on Saturday mornings also a variety of shops, supermarkets and restaurants, some along the river’s edge. There is a cinema and a theatre.

Condom, just 30mins away, is another town worth a visit with its weekly market, important cathedral and interesting merchants houses. Obviously an important transport centre for shipping out Armagnac in ancient times.

We are surrounded by lively villages with regular tourist activity throughout the summer months.
