Modern Gite With Traditional Charm and Magnificent Views
The "Domaine de Gros" is a former agricultural estate going back to the late 17th and early 18th century. The main building, in typical local "chartreuse" style and the surrounding barns and annexes have undergone complete restoration in recent years. In one of these annexes, the former shepherd quarters, have been transformed into a modern "gite" while keeping its traditional charm. It enjoys total privacy, surrounded by 1 ha of private grounds, with its own private entrance. The view from the gite is magnificent. Ideal for those in search of rest and quiet.
The remaining grounds of Gros, woodland and fields, are accessible for guests.
The gite is an officially recognised "Gite de France", classed as " three epis".
Although the location of Gros is isolated, it is not far from the main thoroughfares of the region. Thus it is easily accessible, and sight seeing trips from the gite are easy to undertake.
Holiday Accommodation at Domaine de Gros
The gite is a two storey building:
- Ground floor: a spacious and well furnished living/dining room with a cosy fire place, dining area for 6, couch and armchairs, tv with dvd and video players. Adjacent is a fully equipped, modern kitchen with a breakfast area, sitting 3. In-built cupboards and closets provide ample storage space in the large entrance area, giving access to a spacious master bedroom (double bed 200x160) with private toilet/bathroom (shower). The room is equipped with closets.
- First floor: another double room (twin beds) and one single room/office. Furthermore, a bathroom with tub, and a separate toilet.
- In front of the house: a large shaded terrace (southern exposure) enables residents, for the larger part of the year, to take their meals outside, while enjoying the magnificent view on the unspoilt nature surrounding the gite.
About St Nazaire De Valentane in Tarn-et-Garonne, Midi Pyrenees
Gros is located in the hilly part of the "Quercy Blanc", so called after the white limestone so characteristic for its landscape and architecture. It belongs to the small village of Saint Nazaire de Valentane, a rural village surrounded by orchards, tobacco and sunflowers fields (fruit production is the main agricultural activity in the area). The gite of Domaine de Gros offers a magnificent view of this beautiful scenery, still well preserved and far remote from any mass tourism.
At a few miles from Gros you find dozens of medieval fortified villages and towns, the so-called "Bastides" which are typical for the area (Auvillar, Lauzerte, Castelsarrasin, Castelsagrat, Valence d'Agen, Montcuq, Montjoi, Bruniquel, just to name a few). The ancient pilgrim route to Saint Jacques de Compostela runs through this part of the region, so many monasteries, castles and churches have been founded over the centuries to accommodate pilgrims. Moissac, at 15 km, is the nearest town. It is famous for its Romanic abbey church and monasteries, one of the best known in France. For the rare rainy day, day excursions to the larger towns, like Montauban (city of the painter Ingres), Agen or Toulouse (the medieval "pink city" capital of the Counts of Toulouse) can be made.
While Saint Nazaire ( =2 km from Gros) is too small to offer any facilities, the nearby towns of Lauzerte and Moissac offer all that is needed: supermarkets, shops, medical services, patrol stations etc. Moissac has a good quality hospital.
Nearly all these towns have (twice or) weekly open air markets, some of them specialised (e.g. the poultry and foie gras market in Castelsarrasin). In summer many of them organise brocantes, exhibitions, open air concerts and other events (such as the vintage car days in Negrepelisse).
In the immediate neighbourhood you find plenty of restaurants, mostly serving local specialities (duck, foie gras, cassoulet, wines, fruits) in an often picturesque setting. Generally they are good "value for money". Sophisticated restaurants (one 3 star Michelin) are less numerous, but can be found. Of course, the carry a different price tag.
The Quercy offers plenty of possibilities for sports. Biking is popular, and so is, if it were only for the many pilgrims of St Jacques, walking. A nine hole golf is at 15 km. Moissac, located at both the Tarn and the famous "Canal du Midi" offers many facilities for water sports, nearby St Nicolas de la Grave, where Tarn and Garonne meet in a large lake, has even more. Even less common sports like parachute jumping can be practised. However, for a dive in the sea, be it Atlantic or Mediterranean, one has to take the day, they are not near.
See Local guide and map for information on nearby towns and facilities.
How To Get To St Nazaire De Valentane in Tarn-et-Garonne, South West France
Gros can be easily reached now that various motorways have been completed. Coming from west: take E72 Bordeaux - Toulouse, leave it at exit Valence d'Agen, D953 direction Cahors for about 20 km, at the intersection with D43 turn left direction St Nazaire, after 1800 m Gros is at your left hand. Coming from north: take E9 Brive - Montauban, first exit Cahors, take the roundway of Cahors, then D653 (later D953) Montcuq, Lauzerte. 10 km after Lauzerte, at the intersection with D43, turn right, after 1800 m Gros is at your left hand.
